Description
The Mechanical Engineer - Packaging will work packaging design on project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of projects including process, industrial, and manufacturing facilities. The Mechanical Engineer - Packaging will work in the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting plans according to budget constraints, design factors or client needs. This role requires knowledge in types of packaging, packaging equipment, vendor selection & coordination, and capital projects development.
Supports packaging equipment design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion. Markets include Food & Beverage, Consumer Products, and Pharmaceutical. Processes include packaging of both liquid and dry materials.
Supports packaging equipment design for project phase specific deliverables which Includes but is not limited to: Design Basis, Reports, Heat and Mass Balances (HMBs), Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Equipment List, Line List, Instrument List, Tie-point List, Demolition Drawings, General Arrangements, and Piping Design.
Prepare packaging equipment specifications and data sheets, Request for Qualifications (RFQ's), technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
Review vendor drawings; data interface with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, detailers, and designers.
Coordinate and support Construction Management in the development of subcontractor packages (ie. millwrights / equipment setters, piping, insulation, field fabricated equipment, etc).
Provides field support, including inspection, supervision of installation, commissioning support, and startup assistance on critical equipment.
Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers and contractors ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.
Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.
Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines. (Process, Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Architecture, Electrical, Controls, Designers, and etc.)
Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.
Qualifications
Requirements:
Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineer, Packaging Science or related degree from an ABET accredited program and minimum 3 years of mechanical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineer, Packaging Science or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and minimum 3 years of mechanical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering and minimum 2 years of mechanical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
Strong computer skills include AutoCAD, BIM (Revit), 3D Rendering Programs, hydraulic analysis, and HVAC analysis programs.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
Engineers in Training-EIT Certification
Ability to travel

Knowledge in packaging equipment:
Product Handling Systems - belts, bucket, vibratory, pneumatic conveyors and pumps & piping.
Primary Packaging Equipment - Unscramblers, Fillers, Placers, Cappers, Scales, Labelers, Sleevers, Checkweighers, Coders, Metal Detectors, Accumulators
Secondary Packaging Equipment - Cartoners, Bundlers, Case Packers, Case Erectors, Case Loaders, Case Sealers, Case Coders, Case Labelers, Accumulators)
Tertiary Packaging Equipment - Palletizers, Stretch Wrappers, Labelers
Conveying Equipment - Table Top, Belt, Roller, CDLR, Chain
Knowledge of packaging line controls and automation
Some familiarity with Sanitary Design including 3A standards, ASME BPE, USDA, Aseptic Packaging, and cGMP.
Familiarity with Navisworks, AutoCAD, & PDF Markup Tool.
Some knowledge of packaging system modeling and simulation.
Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.
Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
