Position Title: Manager, Power Generation

  • Incumbent must work in office in Atlanta four (4) days per week and may work remotely one (1) day per week with manager approval

    Summary:

    Under limited supervision, oversees the management of MEAG Power`s generation assets in order to maintain the value and cost competitiveness of the generation portfolio. Supervises two field staff members located at Plant Vogtle and Plant Scherer to represent MEAG Power’s interests in the six jointly owned nuclear units and four jointly owned coal-fired units. Manages the contractual relationship with the third-party operator of MEAG Power’s wholly owned Wansley Combine Cycle facility. Responsible for budgets; forecasting O&M and capital expenses; monitoring performance and regulatory compliance; and identifying and managing capital projects for improved reliability.

    Scope of Responsibilities:

    The yearly operating budget of MEAG Power’s owned generation assets is $300M, and the capital budget is $88M. Routine interface with Georgia Power, as operating agent for the jointly owned units, the co-owners; Oglethorpe Power and Dalton Utilities, and the operator of the Wansley Combine Cycle facility on current issues is required. Routine decisions on operational expenditures, maintenance plans and projects are made at this level.

    Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

    • Supervise and provide direction to two asset managers and support their efforts in the management of the co-owned generating assets. Take the lead as asset manager for the Wansley Combined Cycle facility.

    • Keep abreast of the daily operating status and near-term availability of the generating units and maintain a forecast of planned outages. Communicate with Bulk Power Operations staff for optimal unit dispatch and portfolio economics.

    • Monitor the activities of the co-owner operating agent and the operator of the Wansley Combined Cycle facility with particular emphasis on compliance with the contracts and ensuring that MEAG interests and asset values are protected. Represent MEAG Power on co-owner O&M committees and provide feedback to the agent as required on contractual matters. Oversee the tracking and analysis of the cost and operating performance of the plants.

    • Review and approve the Annual Plan for the Wansley Combined Cycle facility. Work with accounting to prepare the budget for the Combined Cycle Project (Project 10). Plan for major maintenance and capital projects, working with accounting and finance to secure or reserve funds. Manage capital projects, including creating Work Orders; issuing Requests for Proposals, negotiating contracts and issuing purchase orders for equipment and services; overseeing the work; and closing out the project, including working with accounting to retire old and add new equipment to property schedules.

    • Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and ensure that all compliance requirements are met and required reports submitted to regulatory agencies.

    • Review and approve invoices pursuant to the O&M agreement with the Wansley Combined Cycle operator, and process invoices for payment in a timely manner.

    • Participate in MEAG Power’s property insurance program for the Wansley Combined Cycle facility, and MEAG Power’s Accidental Outage insurance program for the co-owned nuclear units.

    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science or related field from an accredited university.

    • 8- 10 years of demonstrated related experience in the electric utility industry.

    • Requires working knowledge of power generating facilities particularly fossil fuel fired steam units and gas fired combustion turbines.

    • Familiarity with the FERC Uniform System of Accounts in addition to general accounting and budgeting practices.

    • Familiarity with bidding, awarding and managing capital projects, and bidding engineering or other professional services

    • Requires the ability to be cleared for unescorted access at nuclear facilities.

    • Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    • Must be well organized in order to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

    • Must be able to establish and maintain good working relationships with direct reports, co-owners, agents and operators, and other Power Generation team member
