Position Summary

The Office of Student Learning and Educational Resources ( OSLER ) is recruiting for a Learning

Specialist. The Learning Specialist will work with the OSLER team to provide academic support

and academic skills enrichment to students in all Morehouse School of Medicine degree

programs, including but not limited to support with learning strategies, study skills, time

management, and organizational skills. The Learning Specialist will conduct regular evaluations of student achievement and progress and recommend specific evidence-based assessments, as

needed, to inform the development of individual learning plans ( JLP ). Individual Learning Plans

will focus on identified areas of deficiency and include specific goals and objectives to address

recommended/required skills development. The Learning Specialist will maintain

documentation of ILPs and conduct regular follow-up and assessment of progress towards

meeting goals identified in ILPs. In addition, the Learning Specialist will work with the OSLER

team to provide academic counseling and deliver student workshops related to the

development of effective learning skills, study strategies, time management, and test

preparation. This person will support faculty by offering workshops, training, and assistance to

enable faculty to better meet the needs of all learners. They will also work with the OSLER team

to provide training to faculty on how to better support academically at-risk students. The

Learning Specialist will work collaboratively with the OSLER team to develop and promote

evidence-based strategies to support and enhance student learning. They will keep key OSLER

faculty and staff up to date on the progress of each student. This person will support current

OSLER programs and work with the OSLER team to develop new academic interventions

designed to improve student performance. The Learning Specialist will help develop and

participate in scholarship focused on evaluation of the effectiveness of existing and new

academic support interventions.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Education, or related field

Experience:

  • A minimum of four years as a Learning Specialist or similar role in higher, post-graduate, or professional educational environments

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

  • Work with the OSLER program manager to monitor student performance and maintain up-to-date, detailed electronic files for students utilizing academic support services

  • Work with students to identify barriers that impact academic performance and develop strategies to overcome those barriers

  • Work with students to develop individualized learning plans ( ILP ) to develop more effective learning, studying, test-taking, and remediation skills

  • Review individual student’s performance and work with students on interpretation of assessments, and making necessary adjustments to individual learning plans

  • Work with the OSLER team to develop and identify student resources and make recommendations for additional academic support services

  • Develop advising and academic support materials

  • Work with course directors to be familiar with course content and structure to provide optimal academic support

  • Connect students to additional campus resources

  • Develop and deliver student workshops to improve time management, organizational skills, stress management, test taking anxiety

  • Assist with training for student tutors on best and most effective tutoring practices

  • Collaborate on training for faculty on learning strategies, study skills, test preparation, and test-taking strategies

  • Assist students in preparing for licensure examinations using best practices

  • Support current, and work collaboratively with OSLER team to develop new academic interventions designed to improve student performance and outcomes

  • Participate in appropriate institutional and external committees and activities to align

  • OSLER student support services with academic programs and other institutional and external resources

  • Assist the Office of Student Learning and Educational Resources with key projects/priorities, to include developing and reviewing reports and assisting with office planning

  • Collaborate with OSLER and academic departments on the writing and publication of scientific papers related to the activities of the office

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are required to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID -19 prior to commencement of employment. If employment will commence during Flu Season, MSM requires all individuals to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless granted an exemption. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain an exemption from MSM will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
