The Emory National Primate Research Center (ENPRC/EPC) of Emory University that oversees an animal research program as well as laboratory research is seeking an Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety Officer, EHSO. The officer will be responsible for the on-site Occupational Health, Biosafety, Chemical Safety and Radiation Safety at EPC. This position has a dual reporting structure within Emory Primate Center and Emory EHSO.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Develops, implements and maintains comprehensive Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) policies and programs to support operations within Emory University and to comply with applicable laws and regulations.

  • Ensures that EHS programs under their responsibility are in line with the department and university's vision and are integrated with, fully cooperative and in harmony with the other programs within the Environmental Health and Safety Office.

  • Serves as a professional resource on EHS issues.

  • Frequent interaction and information sharing with other Assistant Directors/Managers is essential.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS PROVIDED BY THE EMORY PRIMATE CENTER:

  • Overall management of the Environmental Health and Safety Program at EPC.

  • Oversee the on-site EPC Biosafety, Chemical Safety and Radiation Safety programs.

  • Work with University EHSO to implement mandated Federal and State laws, regulations, and guidelines.

  • Manage office of EPC EHSO employees.

  • Provide general oversight for activities involving infectious agents, recombinant DNA, radioactive isotopes, and hazardous chemicals at EPC.

  • Onsite weekly EHSO support at Field Station.

  • Health and Safety liaison for the Emory University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

  • Participate in National Primate Research Centers Occupational Health and Safety NIH Consortium.

  • Assist in preparation of relevant areas of EPC base grant submission and AAALAC program description.

  • Provides TB training course to train others to place read/read TB tests.

  • Oversees TB surveillance program of employees.

  • Oversees program for occupational exposures.

  • Conducting hazard risk assessments.

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) assessments and determinations.

  • Participation in training veterinary residents on EHSO practices.

  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) committee member at EPC.

  • As a member of Emory IBC/Biosafety protocol review, officer makes recommendations for approval and presents protocol at meetings.

  • Conduct agent specific risk assessments, policy and procedure development, training, and implementation.

  • Collaborates with Division of Animal Resources to provide oversight for implementation of new projects such as Zika virus and SARS-CoV-2.

  • manages the development implementation and evaluation of overall policies at ENPRC/EPC to support the University’s Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) strategies including short medium and long-range planning processes.

  • Leads the generation of key insights including goals and objectives.

  • Works closely with the Division of Animal Resources, Administration and Research partners and counterparts throughout the organization to generate and manage these key insights.

  • Assists the Emory University EHSO Assistant Vice President in the annual strategic planning process and contributes to the design of financial tools and models to effectively support that process.

  • Hires, supervises, and evaluates staff within the EHSO unit at EPC.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • On-site occupational health and safety risk assessments.

  • Provide first aid.

  • Track and trend EPC employee incidents and evaluates trends.

  • Oversee immunization assessments, (vaccinia, yellow fever, Hepatitis B).

  • Document notes in occupational health EMR.

  • Hazard exposure monitoring and reporting for various hazards including isoflurane, ETHO, hearing, etc.

  • Facilitate exposure response program and follow up with risk assessment.

  • Collaborates with Infectious Disease MD to provide post exposure prophylaxis and follow up.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree or higher in environmental engineering, public health, occupational health and safety or other appropriate science-related field of study (i.e., chemistry) required.

  • Seven years' experience in management of EHS professional and technical staff or equivalent combination of experience, education and training is accepted.

  • Professional Board Certification preferred. Examples include:

  • CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist)

  • CHP (Certified Health Physicist)

  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional)

  • BSP (Biosafety Professional)

  • CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager)

  • PE (Professional Engineer), etc.

PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, public health or other appropriate science-related field and eight years of environmental health and safety or related experience OR an equivalent combination of education training and experience.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Professional Board Certification required in at least one of the following areas:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) - Most Preferred

  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN)

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)

  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP)

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

  • Biosafety Professional (BSP)

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)

  • Professional Engineer (PE) etc.
