Streets Equipment Operator II: Grade 12 Base Hourly: $20.88/hr.--$31.76/hr. Base Annual: $43,430.00--$66,060.80

JOB SUMMARY:

This position operates heavy equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of city streets and related infrastructure. An incumbent in this position may be designated Equipment Operator II or Equipment Operator III.'

MAJOR DUTIES:

Operates a variety of equipment, including backhoe, asphalt roller, track hoe, track loader, road grader, mini excavator, dump truck, etc. Participates in the maintenance and repair of city streets; patches potholes. Cleans waterways and drainage systems; replaces tiles under roadways. Responds to weather events to assist with snow and ice removal and to remove limbs and trees from streets and rights-of-way. Installs traffic control devices at work sites. Assists with landscaping and grounds maintenance at city buildings. Assists with concrete work; builds forms; pours and finishes concrete. Repairs and builds sidewalks. Transports equipment, materials, and supplies to and from work sites. Operates a variety of hand and power tools, including chainsaw, demolition saw, rakes, and shovels. Operates a variety of grounds maintenance equipment, including mowers, leaf blowers, weed eaters, etc. Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

18 year or older. High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience. Valid Alabama Driver's license. Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations. Sufficient experience usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Equipment Operator II requires a commercial driver's license or ability to obtain. Equipment Operator III requires a Class A endorsement or ability to obtain.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Knowledge of street construction, maintenance, and repair principles. Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance principles. Knowledge of grounds maintenance principles. Knowledge of concrete finishing principles and practices. Knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations. Skill in the operation of a variety of heavy equipment. Skill in problem solving. Skill in prioritizing and planning. Skill in interpersonal relations. Skill in oral and written communication.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

The work consists of related equipment operation duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to operate equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of city streets and related infrastructure. Success in this position contributes to the provision of a safe, well-maintained, and efficient street system.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, distinguishes between shades of color, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

Physical

strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation. Must be willing to work overtime, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary. Must be willing to be on-call.
