Job Description
Advises and assists personnel in the Armed Forces of the United States, Veterans, spouses, surviving spouses, children, parents and dependents of the Veteran in presenting claims or obtaining rights or benefits under any law of the United States or of this state. Receives applications for financial assistance from personnel in the Armed Forces of the United States, Veterans, spouses, surviving spouses, children, and parents of Veterans and presents the applications to the Executive Director/CVSO and/or the Commission and any other additional duties or responsibilities in areas deemed necessary by the Executive Director/CVSO.
The CVSO is directly responsible to the Executive Director/CVSO. In the absence of the Executive Director/CVSO, the CVSO is directly responsible to the Commission and/or other designee, i.e. Chief County Veterans Service Officer. New Service Officers are on probation until they pass the test and are certified by the Ohio Department of Veterans Services.
Duties shall include but not limited to the following
- Interview and process clients for financial assistance.
- Refer veteran and dependents to other assistance agencies.
- Advises and aids veterans or their dependents in presenting disability, insurance or pension claims for benefits under Federal, State and local laws.
- Prepares claim forms and necessary paperwork in support of claims and assembles pertinent evidence.
- Advises veteran on insurance, education, and other VA matters working in cooperation with the Veterans Administration and other government agencies.
All employees of the VSC are subject to the following vetting procedures
- Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles Driving History Check
- Department of Transportation Physical
- Drug Testing
- State of Ohio BCI Background Check
Education
High School Diploma or GED.
Experience
Must be an honorably discharged veteran and must earn status of accredited service officer within 24 months of date of hire.
Physical Demands
A driving requirement exists where interviews cannot take place in the office, i.e. working in outreach or home/agency visits. Possible requirement for driving of personal vehicle when the VSC Van is not available. When using personal vehicle for business on behalf of the Commission, seat belts will be worn and Vehicle Insurance is your personal responsibility.
Reimbursement of travel expenses to use of personal vehicle is in accordance with County Policy and Guidelines.
Compensation
Compensation will be commensurate with experience upon hire. Offers by the VSC are negotiable, however demonstrated experience will be vetted by prior employers before an agreement is made. All pay is based on 80 hours straight time, paid in bi-weekly increments. Overtime and Compensatory Time is
