This position serves as Maintenance/Construction Technician I for Ashe County Maintenance, performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks in at least two complex and/or highly skilled trades in connection with the maintenance and repair of buildings and related equipment and machinery. The position is required to perform a variety of tasks ranging from general and routine assignments to those of moderate complexity requiring the application of knowledge and ability acquired from on-the-job training. The depth and variety of tasks assigned approach those of contributing level position.
Position reports directly to the County Maintenance Engineer. Position is required to know proper use of equipment, and to have the ability to make decisions based on knowledge and experience. Position is responsible for organizing and directing subordinates and/or inmates in the event of an emergency, in a timely manner. Position is required to recognize hazardous conditions and take appropriate actions to safeguard the situation. Position is required to make suggestions to the County Maintenance Engineer on improvements to facility and operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

General Knowledge of the principles and techniques of a variety of complex trades.
Demonstrated ability to operate the more common types of machine shop equipment.
Considerable knowledge of mechanical equipment and materials used for construction and mechanical operations.
Experience inspecting and repair to buildings, grounds, and small engine equipment.
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret plans and specifications
Additional Expectations
Working knowledge of the methods, practices, and materials used in general maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery. Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, and woodworking power equipment. Employee must have ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency call back. Class A CDL Permit required within 360 days of employment. Safety toe footwear required. Ability to obtain supervision of inmate certification. Must be able to obtain/maintain a valid inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety which must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post off employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience associated with a variety of mechanical or building trades; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
