The primary purpose of the position is to perform law enforcement work to maintain law and order, preserve the peace, protect life and civil rights, detect and investigate crimes, arrest or apprehend violators, and perform patrols within the assigned jurisdictions. In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Standards for this series located here Police Series 0083 Individual Occupational Requirements Experience, Education, and Training Specialized Experience: 1 year equivalent to the next lower grade of a GS-7; which would be at the GS-6 grade. Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 1. Knowledge of law enforcement procedures, training requirements and operating methods required to perform the full range of police officer activities independently. 2. Knowledge of special operating requirements, methods, and procedures for enforcing specialized personnel access controls to prevent unauthorized access to areas where stringent security requirements are enforced. 3. Knowledge of appropriate use of force and self-defense techniques to protect oneself and others in threatening situations including the ability to subdue and control individuals as required. 4. Ability to operate motor vehicles have a gross weight of 7,000 pounds or less, loading capacities of 1 ton or less, and 2 or 4 wheels drive to transport personnel and/or articles. 5. Ability to work and communicate effectively orally and in writing. 6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community management, employees, and other law enforcement agencies. 7. Knowledge of aerial surveillance principles to ensure police officers can identify SUAS systems. Education Basic Requirements for 0083: Successful completion of a Federal, State, county, or municipal police academy or comparable training course that included at least 40 classroom hours of instruction in police department procedures and methods, and local law and regulations, may be substituted for a maximum of 3 months of specialized experience or 6 months of general experience. No substitution of education or training may be made for the required specialized experience at GS-6 and above.
