Job Summary
We are currently seeking a Transportation Human Factors and Industrial Engineer . This position will be attached to the Battelle office in Crystal City, VA. The work schedule will be 3 to 4 days a week in McLean, VA, or Crystal City, VA and the remaining time will be remote.
This selected candidate will perform Human Factors and Industrial Engineering research and testing, designs and develops tools, experiments, systems and environments. Specific domain and industry areas include, but are not limited to, transportation and highway safety, driver attention and safety, human machine interface (HMI), driver behavior, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), autonomous driving, connected vehicles, and emerging technologies in transportation.
Responsibilities
Performs complex assignments related to the design and development of tools, systems and environments for increased efficiency and operating performance. Lead and/or conduct research and development activities for experiments and projects.
Interprets complex data and results; writes technical reports. Prepares technical reports and makes presentations to client, both formal and informal.
Troubleshoots processes when expected results are not obtained.
Manages projects, executes technical tasks, communicates with client with regards to the schedule and quality of deliverables.
Both leads and assists with business development and proposal efforts. Independently leads small to mid-size proposals (<500K). Partners with other staff to develop mid- to large-size proposals (500K+).
Builds relationships with internal and external clients for business development and project execution.
Contributes to IR&D studies.
Assist with the coordination of and participation in Battelle- sponsored conferences.
Participate in scientific conferences and peer review panels and works to increase company visibility through publications.
May provide direction to and coordinate the efforts of engineers and support staff in the performance of assigned projects within time and budget constraints.
Oversees, mentors, and trains junior staff as needed.
Key Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering or a related discipline with 5 years of experience in the Transportation Industry or Master’s Degree in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering or a related discipline with 2 years of experience in the Transportation Industry or PhD; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in the Transportation Industry.
Strong understanding and experience in the areas of transportation and highway safety, driver safety and human factors, HMI, application and analysis of transportation and traffic data (e.g., SHRP-2 data), design and conduct of driving simulator and field tests using real-world vehicles in test track and on-the-road settings, road data collection and experiments for transportation human factors studies including naturalistic driving studies.
Must be a self-starter, be able to take on multiple complex assignments, independently manage and prioritize work time to balance customer and business needs, and ability to work with both government and commercial clients.
Prior experience working with NHTSA, FHWA, FMCSA, TRB, State DOTs, and/or other similar clients.
Prior experience doing business development, including capture planning and proposal writing, and demonstrated experience leading winning proposal efforts.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, and ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to a wide range audience.
Must be U.S. Citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
2 years of experience working directly with USDOT and/or commercial organizations.
Demonstrated experience working as Technical Principal Investigator on contract vehicles for USDOT.
Advanced statistical skills and use of R, Python, or similar statistical and scientific languages.
Understanding of human-in-the-loop and model-in-the-loop simulation analysis; Data visualization; Behavioral research data collection techniques.
