Burns & McDonnell Senior Electrical Engineer - Substation in Arlington, Virginia
Description
Responsible for oversight of substation engineering and consulting services for clients across the US and internationally. Main responsibilities include leading others in creating electrical protection & control and/or physical layout design deliverables. Projects range in size, complexity, and voltage class from small distribution equipment upgrades to large transmission projects. This position can influence the future of the resiliency and reliability of the electric grid. Opportunities to advance into leadership/management roles are available.
Position may include full or partial responsibility of the following assignments:
Lead in preparation of proposals and scope development, including:
Conceptual designs and execution plans
Engineering/project cost estimates and schedules
Lead in the execution of engineering activities:
Physical substation design including yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material
Protection and control design including panel arrangements, one lines/single lines, three lines, AC schematics, DC elementaries, equipment wiring and relay panel wiring
Calculations for studies and reports (grounding, lighting protection, AC/DC load studies, etc.)
Equipment specifications for procurement and/or factory acceptance testing
Lead coordination of design activities with other departments (Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line, etc.)
Develop and improve processes, tools and/or technology implementations
Provide leadership, training and mentoring to less experienced engineers and team members
Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel
Perform quality reviews for other engineers and designers
Provide short term field support during construction
Support business development and marketing initiatives
Other areas of involvement may include relay settings, 3D modeling/design, or industry/professional technical committee involvement
Qualifications
Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program. and 7 years electrical engineering experience. EPC project experience preferred. Required or
Bachelor Degree in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. and 7 years electrical engineering experience. EPC project experience preferred. Required or
Master Degree in Electrical Engineering and 6 years electrical engineering experience. EPC project experience preferred. Required
Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. Strong knowledge of electrical equipment design ANSI and IEEE Standards. Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.
Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
Ability to travel.
Professional Engineer (PE) License Preferred
