Job purpose
The BorgWarner Arden campus offers two world class technical centers and a cutting-edge manufacturing facility that designs and produces turbos, fan, and fan drive components for the automotive industry. The Arden campus offers a multitude of career opportunities and is in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.
POSITION SUMMARY:
To provide support through instruction, leadership, mentoring, and independently working in assigned test cells to ensure the integrity of components and products produced by those operations. Drive improvement efforts in assigned area with goal of achieving 100% ignition time for cell utilization. Support process improvement and problem-solving efforts with focus on root cause identification and removal to prevent future occurrences. This is a 2nd shift position.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Serves as a resource for lab technicians to include training, setups, trouble-shooting and “best practices”. Leads training exercises for development of test technicians in the understanding of testing specifications and requirements.
Ability to express self about managerial and technical subjects to all levels of personnel in a clear manner. Documents work performed. Able to develop clear instructions for those reporting to his/her/their lead. Presents information in a professional manner to a wide audience.
Ability to estimate cost and manpower for assigned tasks. Forecasts work, identifies scheduling conflicts and develops solutions to maintain schedule. Responsible for assigning work on a prioritized basis to technicians, and schedules/assigns overtime as needed to meet testing timelines.
Ability to identify process improvement opportunities to minimize downtime, improve test cell utilization, and improve laboratory efficiency and lead project implementation. This includes generating appropriation requests, project tracking and updates through the use of MS project and other MS office applications, and proper communication with maintenance, contractors, and test engineering.
Prepares and presents schedule status in weekly lab meeting(s).
Manages a projects or multiple tasks and maintains technical, cost, and schedule goals. Reports status and results thru management and to a broad audience.
Reads and interprets GEMS tickets to determine necessary hardware, assembly requirements, and test requirements for all areas of the testing lab; makes or recommends changes as required.
Proactively makes recommendations for testing based on testing requirements, keeping in mind minimizing downtime and improving test cell utilization.
Determines part and tooling availability. Coordinates hardware needs and additional support needs from other functional groups to ensure testing is executed as requested and on schedule.
Makes recommendations for new equipment and maintenance of equipment; Serve as project owner for equipment upgrades and installations. This includes generating appropriation requests, project tracking and updates using MS project and other MS office applications, and proper communication with maintenance, contractors, and test engineering.
Identify process improvement opportunities to minimize downtime, improve test cell utilization, and improve laboratory efficiency and lead project implementation. Ensures completion of logbooks, testing notes, and other related records as required per Engineering requests, work instructions, procedures, or specifications.

Identifies cross functional training needs in preparation for upcoming shifts in demand between different testing areas.
Assist with offsite travel preparation and assign technicians and oversee all offsite work.
Work with customers to bring in work to the Lab. Schedule meetings as necessary to promote lab testing capacity.
Acts as a liaison between engineering and instrumentation group.
Evaluates and performs, or schedules stand maintenance and calibration as required.
Performs data accuracy verification to include GEMS ticket closure.
Schedules maintenance for designated area via iMaint.
Drives for shop cleanliness and 6S activities.
Responsible to maintain proficiency with evolving technologies through education and training.
Actively informs others of adverse trends that may impact the long-term success of the business.
Leads troubleshooting exercises related to suspect test data through the use of a formal problem solving approach such as DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control).

QUALIFICATIONS:
Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering Technology with at least 8 years experience in the automotive industry required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Automotive industry experience defined as: experience obtained in a position that requires professional testing of automotive components and in-depth engine work including tear down, reassembly, measurement, and dynamometer testing in a lab or R&D environment.
Experience in the setup, calibration, troubleshooting, and operation of electronics instrumentation and control systems preferred.
Must have a demonstrated mechanical aptitude and ability to learn required. Strong blue print reading experience and ability to utilize dynamometers, indicators, micrometers and dial calipers required.
Six sigma green belt certification, or similar certification; or being willing to complete within one year.
Ability to carry out multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision.
Must have practical computer knowledge including proficiency with Microsoft office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, and Outlook).
Willingness and ability to continue training to upgrade capabilities in technical and interpersonal areas by independent study and formal training.
Knowledge of test adapters, gas and engine stand requirements, test procedures and work instructions.
