Army Tank-Automotive and Armament Command (TACOM) Welder in Anniston Army Depot, Alabama

About the Position: Anniston Army Depot is located in Anniston, AL in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain chain half way between Atlanta, GA and Birmingham, AL just off interstate 20. The Depot is the largest employer in Calhoun County with approximately 4000 employees. Responsibilities Perform ballistic welding involved in repairing combat vehicle hulls, turret and body assemblies. Ensure precision measuring instruments are in good repair and function according to specifications and safety requirements. Work with such metals as armor plate, mild steel, cast steel, and aluminum in thickness up to 2 inches. Operate any one or all standard welding equipment such as acetylene, electric, tig, stick or wire welders, metal cutting power saws, electric and air hammers. Operate any one or all standard welding equipment and wrenches, electric hand guides, plasma torches, sanders, and drills hydraulic jacks and all hand tools common to the trade. Determine proper applications of work methods, procedures, and trade techniques to be applied in performing the ballistic welding involved in repairing combat vehicle hulls, turrets, and body assemblies. Select proper tools, equipment, and process, then determines the sequence of welding passes to minimize distortion of the metal, maintaining a controlled interpass temperature not to exceed 250 degrees F. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Welder without more than normal supervision. I perform welder duties using electric, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes. Work involves planning, lying out work, positioning and clamping work, pre-heating metal, and maintaining temperature to prevent distortion. Fabricates, modifies and uses templates, jigs, fixtures and other guides to repair, or fabricate metal items for a variety of equipment such as combat and tactical vehicles, artillery and small arm weapons, including repair of parts, which must fit in assemblies where close tolerances are required. Makes a wide range of welds; determining disassembly or repair necessary and materials to be used. Works with light, heavy gauge and hardened metals, welding all the various types of weldable items assigned, using flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen Out Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Dexterity and Safety Knowledge of Metals Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Physical Effort: Work involves standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing), and crawling. Welding is performed in flat, vertical, horizontal, and, as required, overhead positions. Frequently lifts items weighing 15-40 pounds and occasionally items over 45 pounds. Working Conditions: Most of work is performed in building that is moderately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Incumbent is exposed to fumes, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches, and heated materials. There is the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, broken bones, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects and discomforts when wearing protective clothing, gloves and flash shield. Education This job does not have an education qualification requirement. Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required.
