Amergis Teacher for the Visually Impaired in Annapolis, Maryland

The Teacher for the Visually Impaired provides students with appropriate learning experiences and activities designed to help them in social, intellectual, and emotional growth. The Teacher for the Visually Impaired organizes and implements an instructional program for visually impaired students.

Enables students to develop competencies and skills to function in a successful and positive manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements lesson plans

  • Prepares lessons that accommodate learning styles

  • Prepares, implements, and evaluates an educational plan for each student based on individually assessed needs

  • Instructs students with visual impairments (VI) in a variety of assistive technology devices and software designed for blind/VI

  • Assists in the selection of instructional materials and equipment

  • Transcribes materials and lessons in braille for blind students or large print for VI students

  • Assesses student learning styles and use results to plan educational activities

  • Conducts assessments of student progress and achievement using testing methodology

  • Compiles reports, records, and documents as required

  • Participates in IEP team meetings with parents, teachers, students, and other school district staff

  • Works in coordination with other teachers in planning and developing the program

  • Completes progress reports on each student

  • Follows school district policies and procedures

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university preferred

  • Valid state teaching certificate as required by state regulations

  • One year experience as a teacher for the visually impaired preferred

  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice

  • Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable

  • Current CPR if applicable

  • TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable

  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)

  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements

  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site

  • Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements

  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required

  • Computer proficiency required

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
