Scholastic Warehouse Supervisor - 2nd Shift - Exempt in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Job Description:

Each year Scholastic Book Fairs, in partnership with schools across the country, hosts more than 100,000 book-sale events that give more than 35 million students and their families access to thousands of affordable and educational products, helping foster a lifelong love of reading.

We are currently in search of a 2ND Shift Warehouse Supervisor (Monday through Friday) to support our local branch team in Liverpool, NY. This full time position offers medical, dental and vision benefits, Paid Time Off, a generous 50% off discount on Scholastic merchandise, and a 401k.

Qualified candidates will be able to support the Branch Manager in the planning, scheduling, directing and execution of the day-to-day warehouse activities of a branch in the Book Fair Organization. Evaluate and asses the team to ensure adherence to company standards and policies, and optimal performance. This candidate will support our mission to encourage reading and promote lifelong learning, and demonstrate our values of caring and respect for all people. Preferred candidate will be able to work flexible shifts to fill in for vacations as needed. Forklift and Cherry Picker experience is a plus.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the hiring and recruiting process for warehouse staff. Conduct orientation for newly hired associates, including introduction of a mentor to act as a “buddy” through 90-day orientation period.

  • Supervise, develop, and train all warehouse personnel and maintain peak level of associate morale and motivation within organization for maximum level of productivity and associate retention.

  • In conjunction with the Branch Manager, evaluate & document warehouse associates’ job performances; conduct all warehouse performance appraisals; recommend salary changes; and set performance goals.

  • Accurately expedite school re-orders in a timely manner, overseeing UPS/ground shipping.

  • Adhere to local, State, and Federal regulations inclusive but not limited to OSHA, DOT, and EEOC.

  • Conduct monthly safety meetings to minimize accidents, incorporating a wellness attitude among all staff members. Investigate job-related incidents (Workers’ Compensation) and file reports in conjunction with Branch Manager.

  • Schedule staff and maintain attendance records. Assist in Labor Hours Tracking - Actual vs. Budget.

  • Assist Branch Manager in the use and execution of production planning system and management of Branch P&L’s.

  • Responsible for closing out fairs, ensuring all cases, displays, and boxes are staged with the book fair properly labeled.

  • May prepare daily packing schedules by reviewing turnovers, checking labels, and communicating specifics on packing instructions.

  • Oversee Fair packing production or replenishment of stock from bulk to shelves as well as the unloading of trucks and cases.

  • Oversee packing and display of product in accordance with schematics, to ensure customer requests and needs are satisfied; including, but not limited to, matching loading procedures to warehouse/driver sheets. Reset picking lines to coordinate with corporate schematics, on a seasonal basis.

  • Oversee the initial set up of fairs for daily deliveries to include accountability of all fair support materials. Emphasis on quality assurance of all outgoing products.

  • Monitor inventory levels and inform management of status, avoiding out-of-stock situations. Assist with physical inventory counts, open houses and warehouse sales.

  • Monitor sell rate of product to reduce out of stock shortages and recommend supplemental title replacements.

  • Train staff on and maintain use of the Scanners for the Book Fairs inventory system.

  • Meet, greet, and assist customers during open houses, warehouse sales, etc., in a courteous and positive manner.

  • Ensure that all warehouse equipment/tools are properly utilized to increase productivity, efficiency, safety, and report any unsafe conditions/equipment or injury to Manager.

  • Responsible for the careful handling of all merchandise, avoiding damage, bending or tearing.

  • Use and monitor proper techniques for lifting, packing, handling heavy objects, climbing ladders, and pushing/pulling cases.

  • Fill Accurate Data on Labor Data Collection Cards

  • May operate forklifts during peak business periods (If certified – must be at least 18 years of age).

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate required, College Degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a supervisory role focusing in warehousing or distribution

  • Prior experience with a sales/service distribution organization preferred.

  • Ability to analyze, develop, initiate, and implement plans and strategies to achieve goals.

  • Strong computer skills; ability to navigate through the internet, MS Office, and email preferred.

  • Ability to utilize scanner systems effectively with minimal errors.

  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to lead and direct associates.

  • Ability to prioritize and meet critical deadlines.

  • Ability to lift/carry 50 lbs., push/pull up to 300 lbs., climbs ladders without assistance. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Ability to work over-time and weekends as needed.

  • Strong team player and the ability to get along with co-workers.

  • Good verbal/written communication skills, basic math skills, and ability to read.

  • Forklift experience a plus.
