Summary
Orthotic and prosthetic residents are not employees of the University of Michigan and spend one year attending to patients in a variety of settings, including inpatient and outpatient, as an extension of their education and an opportunity to learn from trained, clinical staff. Residents are not certified, cannot bill directly for their services, and must have a certified clinician countersign all patient encounter notes.
Responsibilities*
Clinical Experience:
Each resident will shadow a UMOPC clinician as he/she attends to his/her various roles. As each clinician has primary responsibility for a particular clinic, this allows the resident to concentrate on a specific aspect of Orthotic-Prosthetic practice for a sufficient time.
Residents cover on-call service on weekends under the direction of and accompanied by a certified clinician as an opportunity to experience unique situations not available during normal clinic hours.
Responsible for patient evaluation, casting, measurement, design and fitting of orthoses and prostheses, under direction of certified clinician.
Learn to complete proper patient education, device coding and documentation in the provided electronic health record.
Learn to coordinate rehabilitation activities with medical staff and other health care disciplines
Research Experience:
- Each resident is required to produce a directed study during the year's program. The directed study should be geared toward submission for publication or presentation at a national or regional meeting.
Required Qualifications*
Each candidate must possess a Baccalaureate or Master degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics from an NCOPE accredited program, or a Baccalaureate degree and a post graduate certificate in an NCOPE accredited Orthotics and/or Prosthetics program.
Work Schedule
M-F 8am-5pm 40 hrs/wk
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
