Job Summary

The College of Engineering at the University of Michigan is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented individual to join our Resource Planning and Management team as a Facilities Project Manager and Designer. This role will be instrumental in developing and implementing facility planning and improvement initiatives to support the academic, administrative, and support functions of the College.

As a Facilities Project Manager and Designer within the College of Engineering, you will collaborate with College and University partners to ensure that our physical infrastructure supports the University's educational mission and strategic objectives, while also maintaining efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Responsibilities*

As a Facilities Project Manager and Designer within the Facilities Management Office, you will be responsible for developing and implementing key strategic initiatives at the College of Engineering. As such, you will:

  • Scope and manage projects to meet approved budgets and timelines.

  • Liaise with strategic partners both internal and external to the University to achieve project success.

  • Work as a member of a highly interactive and collaborative team.

Project Management & Coordination

  • Coordinate various renovation / design projects across the College, from inception/scoping through occupancy. Coordinate related activities, including but not limited to swing space, phasing, moving, and property disposition.

  • Engage with our building occupants and College and University partners, including Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) architects, engineers, interior designers and construction trades to oversee a variety of projects ranging from furniture replacement to more complex renovations.

  • Lead interior design & furniture coordination for projects of all levels at the College. This will include both direct selection and procurement of furniture as well as coordination with exterior consultants and contractors.

  • Coordinate life safety, code, and accessibility requirements.

  • Coordinate and design projects that go beyond base-level code requirements, especially in areas of accessibility, neurodiversity, ergonomics, sustainability, inclusivity, and well being.

Space Planning

  • Collaborate in the development of strategic visioning that improves utilization and enables the physical spaces on campus to better suit the needs of our units. Strategic visioning includes the changes needed to support growth, new initiatives / programs, and changes in how we do things (e.g. hybrid work, active learning, project team work, etc.).

  • Assist in the development of strategic options with associated fit tests, options, cost estimates, and schedules.

  • Develop decision support materials tailored for stakeholders and leadership.

  • Develop framework for strategic and capital planning for furniture changes and replacement in classrooms and public spaces.

Change Management

  • Prepare users for new / different ways of working and help departments create new behavioral norms and culture.

  • Support units in navigating the organizational transitions that come with physical space transformations.

Standards Development

  • Develop standards that respond to changing office and classroom typologies.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, interior design, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Five or more years of demonstrated experience in the management of renovation projects ranging in scale from small to large through all phases from programming to completion. Prefer previous experience working in a higher education setting.

  • Proven expertise in creating and managing project schedules and budgets.

  • Proficiency in creating electronic 2D drawings and 3D models for communication and presentation.

  • Familiarity with relevant building codes and ADA requirements.

  • Knowledge of current furniture, fabrics and finishes that are appropriate for use in a demanding environment.

Additional Information

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Must be able to travel between buildings, including locations off of North Campus.
