As a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center since 1991, our more than 350 core members, staff, and trainees work to prevent cancer, improve outcomes for those diagnosed, and enhance quality of life for cancer patients and survivors. Among 24 areas of specialty, our multidisciplinary cancer clinics offer one-stop access to teams of specialists who develop personalized treatment plans for each patient.
The Rogel Cancer Center?s mission is to reduce the burden of cancer and advance health equity via transdisciplinary collaboration in research, education, patient care and community outreach.
The University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center seeks an Administrative Director (AD) to provide executive administrative leadership in the cancer center to sustain and enhance the center?s impact across its range of missions. This position offers the opportunity to serve as the administrative lead at a well-established, NCI-Comprehensive Cancer Center with a national reputation for excellence in research, training, patient care, and community service, at one of the finest academic medical institutions and universities in the country.
The AD must work effectively with the Director and other members of the Rogel senior, component, and program leadership teams to identify and prioritize opportunities and implement decisions with center-wide impact. These decisions may be sensitive in nature and might affect University of Michigan (U-M) departments and divisions and other U-M centers and institutes as well as partner institutions, national groups, cancer organizations, and other external collaborating institutions. The AD is a member of the center?s senior leadership team and serves on Medical School and Health System committees commensurate with an AD role.
Key responsibilities for the AD include administrative oversight of 200+ personnel; overseeing resources for a robust Oncology Clinical Trials Support Unit; engaging with Rogel teams in communications, development, education, and community outreach and engagement; fostering impactful relationships with donors and stewardship of center philanthropic resources; developing and implementing innovative approaches to enhance the cancer center?s operations; and leading a culture of ?excellence in everything we do.?
The AD reports directly to the Director of the Rogel Cancer Center, with additional accountability for academic business operations to the Chief Operating Officer of the Medical School. Regarding clinical operations responsibilities, the AD partners with the Executive Director, Ambulatory Care Services for Cancer.

Responsibilities*
Operational Accountability
Provide strategic leadership for all operations to align with and advance the Cancer Center?s mission and goals.
Oversee the financial, human resources, space management, shared resources, clinical research, compliance, communications, community outreach, and patient and family support services functions of the Center.
Assume primary responsibility for securing, maintaining, and ensuring compliance with the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and other significant funding.
Function as the administrative liaison for all development activities conducted on behalf of the Cancer Center.
Financial Management
Collaborate with the Rogel Finance Director and research administration specialists to manage budgets across all units, including Cancer Center Support Grants, program grants, institutional, auxiliary and philanthropic funds.
Monitor financial performance metrics and lead efforts to ensure financial sustainability across activities related to all cancer center missions.
Research Facilitation
Work with the Center?s senior leaders to enhance the quality and quantity of basic, clinical, and
population research.
Identify, research, assess, and implement opportunities to improve operational models and develop new, innovative programmatic approaches for potential application within the Center and its programs.
Administer and oversee all financial aspects of the Oncology Clinical Trials Support Unit (O-CTSU) with the AD for Clinical Research and O-CTSU faculty leadership.
People Management
Serve as the leader of employee engagement efforts, ensuring Rogel is an employer of choice and reflecting high employee engagement scores.
Ensure appropriate hiring practices, performance management, professional development, and succession planning for all Rogel units.
Planning and Evaluation
Participate in the development, execution, and monitoring of the Center?s strategic plans and goals.
Provide leadership for strategic planning and evaluation across all Rogel missions.
Space Management
Manage all Rogel Cancer Center space including research and clinical facilities.
Ensure effective use of space in accordance with strategic goals and standards.
National Leadership in Cancer Center Administration
- Participate in national cancer organization activities to enhance administration contributions and maintain Rogel Cancer Center?s profile as a center of excellence.
Community Engagement
Oversee activities related to community outreach and cancer disparities, especially those required by the CCSG for an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center.
Engage local communities, particularly through Rogel?s Community Advisory Board, to promote cancer disparities research and training and reduce disparities in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
Philanthropy
Manage and allocate gift funds aligned with UM guidelines, donor intent, and strategic goals.
Work closely with the Michigan Medicine Cancer Program development team and interact with key donors.

Required Qualifications*
Master?s degree in health or business administration, or related field.
10+ years of experience in an academic healthcare environment, including operations, personnel, and financial management, demonstrating progressive responsibility and leadership.
Demonstrated organizational skills to oversee administrative functions conducted by personnel with diverse duties.
Demonstrated experience and skill in strategic planning and execution in the context of a large, matrixed academic organization.
Record of success in collaborating with faculty and administrative leaders to achieve institutional goals.
Outstanding verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Administrative leadership, including achieving high levels of employee engagement.
Experience in managing collaborative relationships in a complex, matrix environment.
Experience in managing research and grant activity, including pre- and post-award management.
Experience managing multimillion-dollar budgets in clinical, academic, research, training, and philanthropic sectors.
Experience in building collaborative relationships with community partners and other institutions and Organizations.
In-depth knowledge and experience with research grant rules and regulations.
