Job Summary
Support from donors ensures that the Bentley Historical Library can offer access to comprehensive and well-cared-for collections, collaborate in learning and teaching, and accelerate scholarship across campus and to the state of Michigan.
You will work both independently and collaboratively, directing the planning, organization, and implementation of comprehensive major gift fundraising strategies. You will also develop and solicit a portfolio of major gift prospects, develop and implement stewardship plans, and oversee our select Bentley events.
You will be responsible for personal solicitation of major, planned, and capital gifts. The primary focus will be on identifying prospects and soliciting gifts of $25,000 and more. You will also conceive and implement strategies for prospects, identify and pursue prospects for capital campaign gifts. You will have responsibility for the stewardship of all major gift donors. All donor-related events will also be the responsibility of the Major Gifts Officer. This is an individual contributor role and will have no direct reports.

The Bentley Historical Library, located on the North Campus of the University of Michigan, is dedicated to collecting materials and promoting the study of the histories of both the state of Michigan and the University of Michigan. The Detroit Observatory, the second-oldest building on U-M?s campus, is a division of the Bentley and, today, makes centuries of science and history relevant for a new generation of visitors.
Responsibilities*
Strategic Planning
Gather and analyze data, assess donor and volunteer prospects, and develop strategies designed to work toward the current and lifetime giving potential of individual prospects.
Identify, and formally qualify, new major and planned gift prospects by developing and executing long-range and short-range strategies to produce a pipeline of donors.
Identify, access, and conceive appropriate strategies for approaching prospects in the upcoming ?Look to Michigan? campaign, and match donor interest with Bentley funding priorities.
Donor and Prospect Management
Manage a portfolio of major donors with a focus on gifts of $25,000 or more.
Conduct 100+ strategic moves/visits with prospects and donors per year, and participate in 12+ solicitations per year.
Provide support to our Bentley Director for fundraising activities including strategic planning for Director's fundraising travel, providing briefing materials for meetings, and drafting correspondence.
Initiate and manage donor relationships and stewardship plans for major gifts. Update donor data for all prospects, produce thank you communications and acknowledgements for major gifts, initiate and maintain communication (written and verbal) with prospects and donors.
Document and communicate development work to our Library Director and Associate Director of Advancement in a clear, organized way that conveys gift agreement updates, next steps, and other relevant information.
Maintain connections with the U-M Office of University Development and be a full participant in our development community. Meet with the OUD leadership to work on prospect strategy and discuss progress against goals.
Events
Conceive of and direct donor events for the library and the Detroit Observatory including managing the venue, catering, decoration, entertainment, speakers, set-up and seating arrangements. Work with library staff and administrative partners.
Be a liaison with U-M President's and Regent's Office, and the Office of University Development. Produce follow-up communication plans and reports.

Required Qualifications*
Bachelors' degree or equivalent experience.
3+ years in fundraising and/or alumni relations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support and endowment gifts.
Excellent collaboration skills..
Comfortable retrieving, organizing and researching appropriate donor/prospect information, and data gathering and manipulation.
