Job Summary

The inpatient Orthopaedic Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will provide primary Orthopaedic care and services to Adult Orthopaedic Service patients. Occasional outpatient care and Operating Room (OR) coverage may be required. The APP will coordinate coverage with other orthopaedic inpatient APPs, service residents and fellows as needed/dictated by the model of care. Coverage: Trauma, Oncology, Foot and Ankle, Sports, Hand. (Some flexibility in service coverage may be required)

Responsibilities*

Functional responsibilities

  • The APP will clinically and functionally report directly to the Adult General Orthopaedic Service Chief.

  • The APP will report administratively to the APP Manager in the Comprehensive Musculoskeletal Service Line.

  • Performance reviews will be conducted by the 5A MPlan Director in collaboration with the APP Manager and service chiefs.

Anticipated Work Functions:

  • Generate and maintain inpatient census (list)

  • Pre-rounding review and information gathering

  • Meet and confer with collaborating physician/Service Chief as needed to provide appropriate clinical care

  • Round(s) with Residents and attending(s) as per the Service/inpatient care model

  • Care on the inpatient floor may include, but is not limited to admissions, history, physical exam, radiographic & laboratory ordering/interpretation, evaluation of wounds, dressings, brace/cast management, pain management, coordination of services, documentation and discharge.

  • Coordination of care with residents/fellow(s)

  • Post-round documentation, orders, discharges, inquiries (phone calls and pages from the floor)

  • Prepare and execute handoffs per Medical Staff policies

  • Participate in quality and patient safety initiatives that impact inpatient care

  • Assist with education of PA/NP students, medical students and residents

  • Coordinate care with various consulting physicians and refer when appropriate.

  • Actively participate in the discharge process including delivery of care, dictating patient summaries, and assist with coding supported by well documented plans of care

  • Monitor discharge turnover

  • Support the physicians in meeting quality patient standards.

  • Demonstrate effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently and treat patients.

  • May be requested to participate in data collection for clinical research studies.

  • May be required to provide occasional care for patients in the ambulatory clinical setting or OR as part of the continuum of care treatment plan.

  • Provide pre-operative surgical patient education

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications NP:

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.

  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

  • Current DEA required

  • AHA Approved BLS

  • 1 year of Orthopaedic surgery PA/NP experience, inpatient preferred

Required Qualifications PA:

  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.

  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.

  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required

  • Current DEA Required.

  • AHA Approved BLS

  • 1 year of Orthopaedic surgery PA/NP experience, inpatient preferred

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with orthopaedic surgical patient care including experience in the operating room, and care of preoperative and postoperative surgical patients

  • Experience practicing inpatient medicine also preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, problem solve, and delegate effectively and efficiently.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team member on the Orthopaedic service and with other Orthopaedic Surgery Advanced Practice Professionals.

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and patient service skills.

  • Demonstrated active participation in professional development

  • Demonstrate superior attention to detail and organizational commitment

  • Demonstrate leadership in a professional healthcare setting and other professional activities

Work Schedule

Appointment: 1.0 FTE

Hours/Shift: 5 days/week, 40 hours/week (Some flexibility in schedule may be required)

Shift/Hours/Days: Days, no weekends or on-call requirements
