Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director for Student Academic Affairs and Programs, you will work in the Office of Academic and Student Affairs (OASA) and serve as one of the primary academic advisors for 700+ undergraduate students studying in the Bachelor of Science (BSI) degree program from the point of matriculation to graduation. In addition, you will serve as the primary point of contact for students pursuing undergraduate minors at UMSI, and have opportunities to oversee special projects related to new academic program initiatives.

Responsibilities*

  • Provide accurate, empathetic, and student-centered academic advising to our 700+ residential undergraduate students from matriculation to graduation through one-on-one (virtual and in-person) meetings as well as specialty advising programming and events.

  • Create, maintain, and distribute academic planning resources and advising messaging..

  • Drawing on academic advising and student development theory, develop positive working relationships with our students, holistically assessing their strengths and areas for growth, and connecting them to our community's curricular and co-curricular opportunities that match their interests and needs.

  • Support our students in attending to both personal and academic obstacles they may be facing by connecting them to relevant school and university resources (e.g., tutoring, dispute resolution, counseling services, emergency funding, etc.).

  • In collaboration with other academic advisors, implement the academic difficulty and student support reporting process across academic programs, including monitoring, triaging, and responding to reports from instructors. Elevate crisis or critical cases to the Assistant Director for Residential Academic Programs and/or the Assistant Director for Academic Success.

  • Be a resource for administrative questions regarding undergraduate academic advising and the undergraduate student experience. Contribute to discussions on enrollment projections, course scheduling, and degree audit updates.

  • Support the hiring, training, and development of 1-5 student staff, including functional or administrative supervision of student temp positions,

  • In collaboration with other staff, help design and implement new initiatives, undergraduate minors, and other projects, especially as they relate to the undergraduate program, academic advising, student success, and retention.

Required Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year university.

  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience in advising/counseling/mentoring college students, or related experience, with knowledge of student development theory and academic advising best practices.

  • A history of establishing positive, respectful, and collaborative working relationships with a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty.

  • Demonstrated commitment to access, inclusion, and equity, including experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and identities.

Work Schedule

Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required. May require working during non-business hours and on weekends on limited occasions. Some hybrid remote work may be possible, in accordance with UMSI Remote Work Policy and with supervisor approval, however, this role does have an expectation of on-site work at least 2 days per week. Remote work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change depending on business needs.
