Geological Survey Supervisory Geologist in Anchorage, Alaska

Summary What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? The incumbent of this position is entitled to a cost-of-living allowance (COLA) of 1.69% for 2024 in addition to basic salary. Responsibilities As a Supervisory Geologist within the Alaska Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Responsible to assist the ASC Director in advising the Alaska Regional Director's Office, the Associate Director for Energy and Minerals, Natural Hazards, and Core Science Mission Areas. Serves as a member of the ASC's Senior Management Team. Modifies and adjusts the management structure and assignments within Geology Office (GEO) to best use available personnel, equipment, and expertise, funding and facilities to achieve both GEO and ASC goals. Supervises staff approximately 20 research and technical support personnel with a budget of approximately $3.2 million annually. Provides management oversight and scientific leadership for all work conducted by GEO personnel in support of the mission and objectives of the Energy and Minerals, Core Science Systems, and Natural Hazards Mission Areas. Develops and coordinates short- and long-term scientific goals and project strategies for the Energy and Minerals Mission Area in Alaska and the Arctic. Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver. Physical Demands: The work is generally sedentary, although, field trips and extensive travel can be expected. Travel in commercial aircraft, research boats, and all forms of ground transportation, including hiking, may be required. Work Environment: The work is primarily performed in an office setting but requires travel to visit field stations and attend meetings. The office setting is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated and involves normal everyday risks. In an office setting, the incumbent must often spend extended periods of time working at a computer. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property. Requirements Conditions of Employment Key Requirements: Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period. This position requires completion of a one year supervisory/managerial probationary period, if one has not previously been completed. Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position? Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued. Selectee will be required to file OGE Form 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Statement, upon reporting and annually. A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination. You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. **OR B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. Examples of such experience could include serving as a senior expert involved in geologic work for which technical problem definitions, methods and/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain and whose evaluations and recommendations were accepted by others as those of a technical expert in geology. At this level, Geologists typically represent an authoritative source of consultation for other scientists and program specialists, are called upon to resolve issues that significantly affect geologic programs, make long range and controversial proposals and defend their findings and recommendations in public or high level forums. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement. Education Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).
