Summary
DOWL is looking for an enthusiastic Transportation Intern to provide engineering assistance on a wide variety of engineering projects. The objective of this internship program is to find candidates that are passionate about civil engineering and provide personal, one-on-one mentorship to help them gain knowledge and experience with design projects. During the internship, the successful candidate will use various applications and software to analyze, develop, draft, write, and prepare design packages to support the primary engineering discipline assigned such as Transportation & Structures, Water & Environmental Services, Civil & Land Development, and Construction-Related Services groups. Duties may include performing field work to gather data, providing construction administration support, and inspections services.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
One to two years of college-level course work in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering. Prior work experience in construction or civil engineering related fields is desirable.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Assist with field investigations, analysis of alternative solutions, project design, and construction inspection.
Perform engineering calculations in support of design projects.
Tabulate bid items and calculate construction bid quantities from plans and specifications to estimate construction costs.
Perform AutoCAD drafting support.
Prepare and route project related correspondence and record keeping.
Assist with writing and editing of construction specifications and technical reports.
Other engineering related duties as assigned.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
Ability to effectively present information to clients and co-workers.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Ability to prioritize special projects and daily workload to ensure that work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts, such as probability and statistical analysis, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry.
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
ARC GIS & AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge and experience is highly desirable.
Prior work experience in construction, traffic, or other civil engineering related fields is desirable.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
The work environment is generally an office setting, but intermittent field work is expected. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, while noise on construction sites may be high and require the use of hearing protection.
Geographic locations are taken into consideration with respect to compensation.
