JOB SUMMARY:
The Field Crane Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy crane equipment at construction or industrial sites to lift, move, and position materials or equipment. The work will be outdoors and are often involved in tasks such as rigging, load calculations, and ensuring the crane is set up properly for the job. In addition, to operating the crane, they may inspect the equipment, perform routine maintenance, and work closely with Project team members to coordinate lifts and ensure safety protocols are followed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operate various types of cranes under general supervision to lift, move and set machines, materials, and other loads on a wide variety of construction projects.
- Assemble, set up and rig the cranes properly.
- Operate crane and equipment in a safe, precise, and efficient manner.
- Operate crane or act as rigger/signal person depending on work and staff at hand.
- Operate and determine lifting capabilities in accordance with load chart.
- Operate crane according to written, verbal or signal instruction.
- Inspect the crane for safety standards and report concerns and deficiencies.
- Complete job tickets, crane inspection reports, and other necessary paperwork on a regular basis.
- Responsible for all tasks related to preventative maintenance programs such as: performing lube work, cleaning parts, taking fluid samples, replenishing fluids, inspecting components and parts for proper operations, damage, or wear, etc.
- Inspect equipment and all lifting gear prior to each use to ensure it is in safe and proper working order.
- Assure all lifts are within load limits of equipment and correctly rigged.
- Stay constantly aware of any external conditions and surroundings that could affect crane operation.
- Follow directives from Project Foreman, and anyone senior, with the sense of duty to take initiative and always remain productive at work while on the jobsite.
- Application of versatile construction skills set to assist other trades to meet project needs.
- Work closely with a variety of other trades.
- Participate in development and training opportunities.
- Process and submit necessary paperwork to Project Management and Accounting in a timely manner.
- Repair and replace components and parts as needed on heavy equipment.
- It is a duty to conduct oneself in the best interest of the company while on the job or representing STG.
- Responsibility to report any incident, situation or activity that may affect the companys ability to operate safely, ethically and profitably to the company Risk Manager.
- Act as a team member and mentor less experienced laborers.
- Cooking and cleaning as necessary in the field quarters.
- Work as a team-player with co-workers in a respectful and supportive manner.
- Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Intermediate and progressive knowledge of all aspects of crane operation and rigging, including operating, control, and maintenance.
- Ability to Perform physical labor that requires considerable use of ones arms and legs and moving your whole body such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials at construction sites.
- Precise knowledge and skill to operate and control cranes ranging from 50 to 100 tons.
- Knowledge of crane and construction industry with ability to stay up to date on industry regulations and best practices.
- Knowledge of construction and crane operation safety protocols and best practices.
- Skill in inspecting cranes and rigging equipment for safety and maintenance purposes.
- Strong attention to detail and focus on safety.
- Ability to observe safety and security procedures; determine appropria e action beyond guidelines; report potentially unsafe conditions; use equipment and materials properly.
- All around knowledge of materials, terms, and practices in construction field.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ability to perform trade for long hours, day after day, often in adverse conditions, to complete the project at hand.
- Ability to prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently; plan for additional resources; set goals and objectives; develop realistic action plans.
- Ability to follow instructions, respond to direction, and be accountable for own actions.

- Ability to work in all weather conditions and outdoor environments; prior experience in Alaskas rural construction industry is preferred.
- Ability to live and work with co-workers in close quarters and keep good morale.

QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Crane Operator Certification.
