Job Information

This position is represented by the Plumbers & Steamfitters, Local 367, and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

This advertisement is for a Collection & Distribution Operator (CDO) Levels I to V. The certification(s) the successful candidate holds at the time of the job offer may be the level in which the candidate is hired.

Current Salary Range

Level 1: $33.97 - $35.67 / hour

Level 2: $35.67 - $37.46 / hour

Level 3: $37.46 - $39.37 / hour

Level 4: $41.29 - $43.34 / hour

Level 5: $43.34 - $45.52 / hour

DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility

HOURS OF WORK: 4/10s, Monday - Thursday OR Tuesday - Friday, 6:00 am - 4:30 pm

LOCATION: 325 E 94th Court

This is a Seasonal position, which will last approximately six (6) months from the date of hire.

Participates in major emergencies or disasters as outlined in AWWU’s disaster plan matrix, which defines each employee’s potential duties and responsibilities. This may include 12-hour work shifts, which may continue for 72 hours or more starting at any time an event might occur, 7 days a week, 24 hours per day.

Example of Duties

Operates the water distribution and/or the wastewater collection systems, and performs both the preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance on those systems as assigned, supervised, and reviewed, based on the required skill and the level of supervision needed, and according to the applicable State of Alaska Operator Certification level of the individual. Employees are assigned general duties in the broad area of the water distributions and/or wastewater collection systems to work independently, with less direct supervision, and more responsibility as proficiency levels, appropriate licensing, and experience increases. Employees work varying shifts, including early mornings, days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays, on emergency and non-emergency assignments, to meet the water distribution and/or wastewater collection needs of the Municipality of Anchorage, in the domestic, commercial, and industrial sectors. Water Distribution & Wastewater Collection Operators III & IV are lead positions, and assist in the training of other operators and may be assigned as Crew Leads with the duties that include assigning, controlling, and checking work for accuracy and conformity with procedures and regulations, as well as acting in some supervisory roles as assigned. Perform other required duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Collection & Distribution Operator In Training - Level 1

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience in the operations, maintenance, construction, installation, modification, and/or repair of water distribution or wastewater collection systems.

Must possess:

  • Valid State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License, Class B (CDL-B) with tanker endorsement.

Collection & Distribution Operator I - Level 2

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience in the operations, maintenance, construction, installation, modification, and/or repair of water distribution or wastewater collection systems, of which one (1) year must have been in Collection and Distribution.

Must possess:

  • Valid State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License, Class B (CDL-B) with tanker endorsement.

  • Valid State of Alaska Water Distribution 1 Operator and Wastewater Collection 1 Operator Certifications.

Collection & Distribution Operator II - Level 3

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience in the operations, maintenance, construction, installation, modification, and/or repair of water distribution or wastewater collection systems, one (1) year of which must have been as a Collection and Distribution Operator I with the Municipality or equivalent.

Must possess:

  • Valid State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License, Class A (CDL-A) with tanker endorsement.

    • Valid State of Alaska Water Distribution 2 Operator and Wastewater Collection 2 Operator Certifications.

Collection & Distribution Operator III - Level 4

High school diploma, GED, or e quivalen t, and two (2) years of experience in the operations, maintenance, construction, installation, modification, and/or repair of water distribution or wastewater collection systems, one (1) year of which must have been as a Collection and Distribution Operator II with the Municipality or equivalent.

Must possess:

  • Valid State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License, Class A (CDL-A) with tanker endorsement.

  • Valid State of Alaska Water Distribution 3 Operator and Wastewater Collection 3 Operator Certifications.

  • Valid Pipeline Assessment Certification Program (PACP) certification at time of application.

Collection & Distribution Operator IV - Level 5

High school diploma, GED, or e quivalen t, and two (2) years of experience in the operations, maintenance, construction, installation, modification, and/or repair of water distribution or wastewater collection systems, one (1) year of which must have been as a Collection and Distribution Operator III with the Municipality or equivalent.

Must possess:

  • Valid State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License, Class A (CDL-A) with tanker endorsement.

    • Valid State of Alaska Water Distribution 4 Operator and Wastewater Collection 4 Operator Certifications.
  • Valid Pipeline Assessment Certification Program (PACP) certification at time of application.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Commercial Driver's License, Class A/B (CDL-A/B) with tanker endorsement, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug screening prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the satisfactory review and completion of the Previous Employer Alcohol & Drug Test Information Forms. Names, addresses, and phone numbers for positions that required Department of Transportation testing for the last two years will be required in compliance with § 40.25 and § 382.405 (f) and (h).

All required certifications and/or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference
