About the Role

The role will lead strategy development for the A&G business overall and for the Academic Leaders & Funders segment, working closely with the A&G leadership and senior stakeholders across Elsevier. ALF’s mission is to provide customers with insights that support critical decision-making. Our portfolio aligns with how these customers want us to deliver insights: Analytics Products, Academic Information Systems and Analytical & Data Services. You will lead an A&G-focused strategy team, working closely with the pricing and insights teams. The role is part of the A&G Leadership Team and reports directly to Elsevier’s EVP strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Partnering with the management team to shape strategic agenda, defining key strategic issues and driving problem-solving. Helping to evolve our proposition and business model to meet changing customer needs.

  • Developing the strategy and operating plans for A&G and the ALF segment. Working with the product, marketing and sales team on strategies and roadmaps. Presenting strategic plans and recommendations to senior management and other stakeholders.

  • Developing an understanding of market fundamentals, including customer needs, market sizing, competitive positioning, regional differentiation and business models. Deepening our understanding of key drivers and barriers in the segment, informing our strategic planning. Ensuring our strategic plans are based on solid market intelligence and customer insights.

  • Leading multiple strategic projects across the portfolio. Driving strategic projects such as entry into adjacent segments/markets, commercial strategy and portfolio prioritisation. Evaluating strategic partnerships, acquisitions and divestments.

  • Translating strategies to execution plans and business cases. Leading the execution of strategies as appropriate.

  • Driving the implementation of data-driven progress measures for executing our strategies. Tracking the execution of our strategies, identify issues to address.

  • Driving revenue growth and go-to-market execution. Prioritising resources, helping stakeholders prioritise resources when making choices on product portfolio and go-to-market strategies.

Requirements

  • Experience in a matrix environment with demonstrated success at defining an agenda despite inherent conflicting opinions, demands, and priorities.

  • Possess information solutions experience with academic, research and publishing experience of great interest. Deep quantitative skills, e.g., ability to perform analyses of complex datasets.

  • Demonstrate capability to drive decisions strategically, analytically and intellectually. A self-starter with ability to balance several initiatives simultaneously. High level of energy, professionalism and trust. A leader by example with a “can do” attitude.

  • Demonstrate experience in managing strategy projects independently, from work plan to recommendations and execution. Possess outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Possess advanced leadership skills and team orientation. Influential collaboration skills. Be an unconstrained, out-of-the-box thinker.

  • Demonstrate effective communication skills. Able to synthesise findings clearly and present to an executive audience. Adept in thought leadership.

  • Demonstrate advanced financial acumen. Able to link strategy to finance and commercial performance.
