Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is located on a beautiful rural campus in Amherst, Massachusetts. We provide residential undergraduate education to nearly 900 students. Each department at Hampshire College contributes to the collaborative culture of the organization and plays an important role in the success of the College. The mission of the office of human resources is to provide guidance and support to our academic and administrative offices on all college policies, procedures, and practices related to employment and human resources. Our core services and competencies include recruitment, hiring, compensation analysis, benefits administration, performance planning, training/development, employee relations, information system management, as well as compliance with state and federal employment laws and regulations. As part of the human resources team, you will be instrumental in the department achieving its mission and goals!
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The HR operations manager oversees the core administrative and operational aspects of the human resources function. They ensure that HR processes and systems run smoothly and efficiently. This role ensures the effective coordination and implementation of HR processes, manages daily operations, and upholds departmental standards and policies. Working closely with the senior director, the HR operations manager drives HR strategy, optimizes HRIS for streamlined workflows and data-driven decision-making, and fosters a positive workplace culture. This position plays a pivotal role in aligning HR initiatives with organizational goals and overseeing the flow of work within HR and across departments. As a member of both the HR team and the division of finance and administration, this position is essential to employee and community service and experience. The incumbent must feel comfortable working in an often fast-paced organizational framework with shifting and evolving responsibilities. This position collaborates with other HR staff, and a variety of other college offices to meet the department goals, and further the mission of the department and the College. This position participates as a committed member and leader of the human resources team in college and division committee work, projects, meetings, events, and overall community development.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
Knowledge in:
Best practices for human resources operations, including talent management, recruitment and hiring, benefits, record keeping, and project management;
Applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards governing employment, payroll, and benefits;
Understanding of best practices in higher education human resources services such as academic years, faculty/dean positions, etc.
Skills in:
Planning, organizing, scheduling, assigning and reviewing the work of others;
Selecting, training, instructing, appraising, counseling and motivating assigned staff;
Maintaining records and preparing reports and correspondence including required regulatory reports and records;
Computer proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel, HRIS, payroll systems, and web-based software);
Communicating; both verbal and written communication, as well as presenting information to groups;
Customer service to include responsiveness, providing a friendly approach, and problem-solving;
Maintaining strict confidentiality of compensation, benefits, leave, employment, and other sensitive information;
Organization and the ability to manage multiple priorities;
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
Project management to include developing project plans with steps and timelines and ensuring project is seen to completion within set timeframe;
Time management to include ensuring deadlines are met or completed ahead of commitment;
Ability to educate employees on employment matters and other HR topics;
Evaluating and recommending procedures, standards and methods for employee relations, recruiting, hiring, employment changes, and other HR topics;
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work;
Coordinating and managing the departments’ programming and special projects;
Assisting in the preparation of plans and design changes for benefit plans and programming;
Exercising sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines;
Ability to work as a self-directed individual contributor, supervisor, and team member;
Commitment to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds;
Understanding of a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities within a community of college students and staff;

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
Two-year college degree or equivalent
Five years of job-related experience
Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
