Job Description:

Summary

The System Analyst High Performance Computing (HPC) works in a team dedicated to support, strengthen, and expand the High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Research Computing needs of Iowa State to make the ISU community an exceptional place to work, teach, research, and learn.

The HPC team, consisting of 10 full-time professionals, supports Iowa State University clusters and researchers from multiple disciplines, and in addition manages a US Department of Agriculture HPC facility under a research agreement. Being part of the team offers excellent opportunities for professional development through cross-training and provides the flexibility to take time off without the need to remain available 24/7. The employee in this position is subject to a USDA background check.

Ability to learn quickly and be a team player are critical for this position. The successful candidate will be mostly responsible for user support, assisting users with installing software packages, setting up job scripts and workflows, troubleshooting job failures, compilation issues, and job performance concerns, seeking help from other team members when necessary. Other duties include contributing to user documentation, organizing HPC-related workshops, and helping with software updates.

This is a 3-year term position with the possibility of renewal.

Hybrid work arrangements are allowed for this position.

Example of Duties

  • Assisting users with setting up job scripts and workflows.

  • Troubleshooting job failures and addressing job performance concerns.

  • Helping users installing research software (e.g., Python and R packages, creating containers, compiling code) in user space.

  • Resolving most customer problems and issues and responding to requests without escalation.

  • Documenting customer issues and recording actions using ticketing system.

  • Supporting university training and outreach activities, organizing and teaching HPC-related workshops.

  • Contributing to user documentation and self-help resources, ensuring the latest processes and standard methodologies are clearly communicated.

  • Providing training and/or direction to lower-level staff.

Leveling Guidelines

• Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals

• Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues

• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems

• Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests

• May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff

• May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity

• Provides guidance to students
