Position Title:Postdoctoral Research Associate

Appointment Type:Post Doc/Trainee

Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Strable Lab in the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology seeks a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral researcher with training in molecular biology, plant genetics, cell biology, and/or bioinformatics to investigate meristem activity and function related to rice development at single cell/nuclei resolution. This is a 12-month position with annual renewal contingent upon available funding.

In this role, you will design and perform single-cell RNA-sequencing on rice vegetative and reproductive apical meristems utilizing latest and emerging single-cell technologies. You will work to characterize and functionally validate rice cell-type-specific transcriptional programs, their regulation during development, as well as the downstream networks of cell-type-specific transcriptional programs, conduct RNA in situ analyses and carry out developmental genetic analyses of rice carrying mutations in the cytokinin pathway. You will meet weekly with Dr. Strable to discuss experimental design and approaches, data and analyses, best practices in proposal writing, preparation and workshopping manuscripts, mentoring, and career trajectories. You will also be expected to assist training and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, as well as visiting scientists, and to participate in lab outreach activities that are central to the broader impacts of the research.

Applicants should have a sound understanding of vegetative and reproductive meristems and the ability to stage and dissect them as well as be proficient in single cell transcriptomic data analysis, including, but not limited to implementing CellRanger, Seurat, Monocle and/or Slingshot/tradeSeq packages.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in molecular biology, genetics, developmental biology, plant biology, integrative biology or bioinformatics or related field

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ph.D. awarded no more than five years prior to the start of the appointment.

• Experience in plant development, especially rice growth and development, functional genomics, evolution, gene expression/regulation and biological networks.

• Demonstrated expertise and hands-on experience in plant molecular biology, plant genetics, and bioinformatics, and in experimental design and analyses of genomics data, including next-generation sequencing analyses, and a strong track record of research productivity and independence in these fields.

• Evidenced skills in protoplast and nuclei isolation, single cell transcriptomic analyses including related informatics packages, trajectory inference analysis and/or data integration.

• Experience with DNA- and RNA- related experimental approaches, RNA in situ hybridization, histology and microscopy, including bright field, confocal laser and scanning electron microscopy.
