Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Iowa State University invites candidates to apply for a three-year assistant teaching professorship to start in August 2025. AOS/AOC: Open. The successful candidate will teach 3 courses per semester (3/3) and will be assigned multiple in-person sections of PHIL 3430, “Ethics of Computing and AI” (currently entitled “Philosophy of Technology”). This course is required for students in computer science and artificial intelligence but also attracts students without computer programming skills. The successful candidate will have latitude in developing the course. Given projected needs, preference will also be given to candidates with demonstrated experience of effective teaching of other applied ethics courses (e.g., business ethics, medical ethics, etc.). Opportunities for additional (online) Summer or Winter teaching might be available. The successful candidate will also perform modest service. The three-year contract may be renewed following a successful review and continuing need of the program.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.A. in philosophy or related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in philosophy or related field

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness

  • Range of teaching experience

  • Ability to teach PHIL 3430 (“Ethics of Computing and AI”)

  • Demonstrated ability to teach other applied ethics courses (e.g., business ethics, medical ethics, etc.)
