Summary
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences seeks an Academic Advisor II to advise students majoring in criminal justice and sociology, joining a team of advisors within the college's curricular based social sciences unit, which includes criminal justice, psychology, political science and sociology students.
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences oversees the most academically varied college at Iowa State University. With 21 academic departments, one professional school, over 50 undergraduate majors, and more than 20 cross-disciplinary programs, the college is a cornerstone of nearly every major offered at Iowa State.

• Bring a student-centered lens to advising
• Have a preference for collaboration
• Have experience teaching, advising, or counseling a variety of populations in one-on-one and group meetings
• Possess excellent communication, organizations, leadership, and time management skills
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
Example of Duties
• Advises students concerning degree planning, academic support services, academic policy issues, and graduation requirements
• Refers students to appropriate resources such as counseling, academic success, financial aid, etc.
• Assists with new student orientation programming and may teach orientation courses.
• Presents at orientation and other new or prospective student events.
• Participates in recruitment and retention activities.
• May coordinate and advise learning communities and peer mentors.
• Participates in departmental and curriculum committees.
Level Guidelines• Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals• Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems• Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests• May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff• May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity• Provides guidance to students
