Talen Energy Senior / Principal Hydrogeologist in Allentown, Pennsylvania

Senior/Principal Hydrogeologist – Corporate Environmental

Talen Energy is seeking an experienced Senior or Principal Hydrogeologist for our corporate environmental group. The role will focus on regulatory compliance, groundwater modeling oversight and leading corrective action efforts. The individual would function as a subject matter expert for a number of those items depending upon the individual’s experience and growth/development.

The candidate must display a proven track record of decision-making, problem-solving, and independent execution of the various tasks with minimal supervisory oversight.

The position will support projects involving multiple Talen Energy power plants in the Northeast / Mid-Atlantic region. The base work location for the successful candidate will be Allentown, PA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and track compliance deadlines across multiple sites. Prepare and submit timely groundwater reports for State and Federal regulations.

  • Applicant will be directly responsible for Talen’s groundwater sampling/analytical and data management consultants. Applicant will prepare requests for proposals and support contract development for groundwater and other hydrogeologic characterizations. Provide oversight and contractor support for office and field activities.

  • Ability to review and interpret complex Federal and State Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) regulations. Manage the ongoing, and implementation of new, groundwater monitoring networks. Manage alternate source determination studies as well as remediation efforts in accordance with the 2015 CCR Rule, the CCR Legacy Rule, and state-specific regulations.

  • Provide subject matter expertise in liquid management related matters and other closure support activities for CCR units.

  • Develop relationships with Agency interactions to obtain approval for workplans. The applicant would be required to communicate routinely with local regulators.

  • Review and analyze groundwater data to ensure the quality of the data, adherence to regulations, and ability to troubleshoot issues. Oversee statistical evaluations and fieldwork, including the collection and interpretation of geological and geotechnical data.

  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to ensure overall compliance.

Candidate Qualifications

Candidates must meet the basic qualifications to receive consideration.

Basic Qualifications:

Senior Hydrogeologist

  • Bachelor's degree in geology, hydrogeology, or closely related discipline

  • Professional Geologist (PG) license in at least one jurisdiction

  • 5 years of work experience as a hydrogeologist

  • Knowledge of CCR Rule, CCR Legacy Rule, monitoring networks, and familiarity with the use of hydrogeologic data to support groundwater model development, statistical methods and model calibration

Principal Hydrogeologist

  • Bachelor's degree in geology, hydrogeology, or closely related discipline

  • Professional Geologist (PG) license in at least one jurisdiction and the ability to obtain PG License in Pennsylvania

  • 10 years of work experience including at least 5 years in the power sector

  • Knowledge of CCR Rule, CCR Legacy Rule, monitoring networks, and familiarity with the use of hydrogeologic data to support groundwater model development, statistical methods and model calibration

  • Experience with assessment of corrective action, remedy selection, treatability studies, and implementation of groundwater remedies

  • Experience with impoundment closure plans, design, and implementation

Both Senior and Principal

  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication skills, ability to write well, and attention to detail

  • Ability to interact and collaborate with a wide variety of internal clients and contractors

  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet compliance and project needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in geology, hydrogeology, or engineering with an emphasis in hydrogeology

  • Recognized expertise in CCR demonstrated by regularly attending industry conferences

  • Experience designing and implementing hydrogeologic field investigation activities, including drilling and well construction, standard field sampling procedures for soil, rock, sediments, surface water and groundwater, and aquifer tests

  • Experience developing site specific groundwater risk assessments
