Alfred University Resident Assistant in Alfred, New York
Note to Applicant: The Resident Assistant position is from August 4th 2025, until May 18, 2026. Weekend and evening availability is required. Must attend summer and winter training, and be available during openings and closings on the below dates:
Fall Training: August 4 to August 24, 2025
Fall 25 Opening: August 21 to August 24, 2025
Fall 25 Closing: Saturday, December 13th, 2025
Winter Training: January 14 to January 18, 2026
Spring 26 Opening: January 18, 2026
Spring 26 Closing: May 18, 2026

Job Summary: In this role, you will act as a student leader to support a community of residents. The purpose of the Resident Assistant is to promote a healthy living and learning environment by fostering relationships, building community and being an engaging presence within the halls.
What Will I Do:
Serve as a role model to all community members and to each other within and outside of the university
Complete the SAXONS Belonging Model:
Programming
Outside of the required Student Engagement category, RAs must do 3 programs per semester
RAs can do no more than 1 event per category per semester (excluding the Student Engagement category)
RAs must do a minimum of 1 event per month
Create event flyers
Promote events in the halls and via email
Submit programs via AU Connect
Complete post-event evaluations
Create 1 bulletin board per semester
Create 1 door decoration per semester
Pick up flyers from the main Residential Communities office and hang them in your hall
Verify any flyers in the hall are approved to post
Encourage student participation in clubs, organizations, and activities
Support Living Learning Communities (LLCs) as needed
Promote the ideals and be involved in the development of their assigned LLC
Community Development:
Complete 2 Saxon Chats per semester:
Complete & submit 1 Saxon Chat by October 15
Complete & submit 1 Saxon Chat by December 5
Know all your residents by name and room within the first six weeks of the semester
Host community (floor) meetings
Be visible and recognizable in your community
Engage with each resident at least once a week
Initiate dialogue within individual and group dynamics
Serve in an On-Call duty rotation:
Be in your duty area when on-call
Sunday-Thursday: Active Duty from 8:30 pm to midnight. On-Call from midnight to 8:30 am
Friday & Saturday: Active Duty from 8:30 pm to 2 am. On-Call from 2 am until Sunday at 8:30pm
Check in with staff member on Call by 8:45pm
Perform rounds of all buildings in the area with duty partner
2 rounds (Sunday through Thursday)
3 rounds (Friday & Saturday)
Submit nightly duty logs at the end of an Active-Duty shift
Complete lockouts and submit necessary documentation
Identify and appropriately handle incidents
Policy Enforcements and Resident Support
Enforce and adhere to all policies outlined in the Student Code of Conduct, Housing Agreement, and the Student Staff Incident Response Guide
Follow up post-policy enforcement to maintain a positive community
Refer students to support services on campus as needed
Act as a mandatory reporter for all Code of Conduct violations, Title IX, and discrimination-related behaviors
Address behaviors, and support students dealing with difficult situations including, but not limited to sexual assault, suicide and other mental health issues, and alcohol and drug issues
Write Incident Reports within 2 hours of an incident and follow report writing guidelines
Notify appropriate professional staff when needed (Public Safety, Pro Staff on Call)
Attend all required Residential Communities events:
Be present for the entirety of Residential Communities training (Summer & Winter)
Attend weekly staff meetings
Attend weekly 1:1s
Participate in fall opening
Participate in fall closing
Participate in spring opening
Participate in spring closing
Participate in the Hot Dog Day door duty rotation
Attend all required Residential Communities events:
Be present for the entirety of Residential Communities training (Summer & Winter)
Attend weekly staff meetings
Attend weekly 1:1s
Participate in fall opening
Participate in fall closing
Participate in spring opening
Participate in spring closing
Participate in the Hot Dog Day door duty rotation
Required Qualifications to Apply:
Must be a full time Alfred University student
Must have lived in university housing for at least one semester prior to applying
Must be a full-time student for both Fall 2025 and Spring 2026
Interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work well with others
Ability to assess urgent situations and respond under pressure

Compensation for this position will include a double-occupancy space for use as a single room (where applicable). In addition, the cost of housing is a credit on your student account. (note that exceptions to the single room may be made for unforeseen circumstances). Please note that the Office of Residential Communities may move an Student Leaders assignment at any point to meet the needs of the department, and Student Leaders are not able to alter their compensation package.
