Shift: Full-Time, Nights (>10 hr. shifts) with rotating weekends

Job Summary and Qualifications

The Patient Safety Attendant (PSA) participates in high-quality, patient-centered care by providing continuous observation and monitoring for high risk patients. In collaboration with the patient care team, the PSA ensures the patient environment is free of obstacles and minimizes risk of falls and accidental or intentional self-harm. The PSA may also assist with basic activities of daily living.

What you will do in this role:

  • Maintains a direct line of sight with patient at all times, including while family and/or visitors are in the room.

  • Accompanies patient and ensures patient safety during transportation, testing, and procedures occurring away from the patient’s normal environment.

  • Establishes a safe, risk-free patient environment by utilizing knowledge of fall prevention protocols, infection control measures, and self-harm prevention. Performs room assessment regularly and after any visitations.

  • Creates clear, accurate documentation on patient status and activity during the shift.

  • Performs other duties as needed when not providing direct patient observation. Assists nursing staff with tasks such as transporting patients, delivering equipment and supplies, transporting specimens, delivering patient trays, answering phones, and assisting visitors.

  • Participates as an active member of the health care team and positively promotes the rest of the team to patients/families/caregivers and other colleagues.

  • Participates in hospital or departmental performance improvement activities, and seeks opportunities to improve department and inter-department processes.

  • Restocks non-medicinal patient room supplies as needed.

Sitter Responsibilities:

  • 1:1 patient monitoring. Visual contact must be maintained at all times.

  • Monitor visitors that are approved to visit patient.

  • Report to the nurse if patient has any type of devices in the room that may cause harm.

  • Check patient frequently while patient is sleeping. This includes pulling covers away from patient’s face and hands to observe the patient.

  • Convey an attitude of compassion, empathy and understanding to the patient.

  • Notify the nurse if patient communicates thoughts of suicide.

  • Notify the nurse if patient displays any strange or unusual behavior.

  • Give a thorough report the nurse when being relieved for a break or lunch.

  • Call out for help if an emergency situation should arise.

  • Accompany patient for diagnostic testing or treatment.

  • Remain with the patient until relief has arrived.

  • Assist patient with oral and bodily hygiene at least once during the shift.

  • Help with repositioning and turn as necessary to prevent skin breakdown.

  • Change linen once a day and more frequently as needed. Straighten linen as necessary.

  • Communicate any issues with the nurse caring for the patient throughout the shift.

  • Handoff report to relief staff.

  • Assist the patient during meals.

  • Document care given to patient in Meditech.

Patient Care Tech Responsibilities:

  • Assists the nurses by performing various patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary to meet personal and comfort needs and carry out the medical and nursing plan of care for all adolescents, adults and geriatrics.

  • Patient care activities are coordinated through collaboration and planning with other member of the health care team.

  • Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the following age groups: adolescents, adults and geriatrics.

  • Meets all physical needs of the patient in a timely manner regardless of patient assignment.

  • Able to identify potential or actual victims of abuse and understands proper reporting mechanism.

  • Communicates patient’s report of pain to the nursing staff.

  • Assignments are carried out accurately and efficiently and clarified when necessary.

  • Assists in implementing the medical and nursing plan of care by:

  • Taking vital signs accurately and documenting appropriately.

  • Providing comfort and hygiene measures in a timely manner.

  • Providing nutritional requirements in a timely manner and accurately recording intake and output.

  • Keeping the patient’s immediate environment clean and safe.

  • Keeping the staff nurse informed of patients’ conditions, response to care, and any concerns voiced.

  • Performs assigned treatments:

  • Enemas and douches

  • Ice collar and aqua module

  • Ostomy care

  • Urinary catheter care and removal

  • Capillary blood sugars

  • Non-sterile dressing changes

  • Demonstrates clinical knowledge and documentation when caring for suicidal/PEC’d/CEC’d patients.

  • Meets the rehabilitative needs of patients as instructed by the nurse by:

  • Assisting in moving in and out of bed.

  • Assisting in positioning and repositioning while in bed to prevent skin injuries.

  • Exercising extremities.

  • Adheres to principles of safe body mechanics.

  • Assume responsibility and accountability for the economical and safe utilization of supplies and ensures that discontinued equipment is removed, cleaned properly, and returned to central supply properly.

  • Achieves stated goals related to job performance. Educational records reveal attendance at all required educational programs/in-services.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
