Job Description

We are looking for a Physicist with an expertise in astrodynamics to develop software modeling and simulation capabilities for operational analysis, create innovative algorithmic solutions to simulation modeling problems, and serve as a technical consultant to the rest of the model, simulation, and analysis team. You will collaborate with architects, developers, technical leads, customers, and end users to collect requirements, design solutions, and deliver extensible software applications. The work supports entities such as the United States Air Force and the United States Space Force supporting the advancement of space superiority and multi-domain operations. Majority of work will be on-site with a flexible schedule allowing for hybrid work. This job will be located at Kirtland AFB.

Essential Job Responsibilities

The focus of this work is assessing problems and solutions in Space Domain Awareness and Space Combat Power. Job functions include the following:

  • Formulate algorithmic approaches to solve data analysis tasks. Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code for systems.

  • Design and implement orbital mechanics code for various applications.

  • Assist other staff as a contributor on both customer and internally funded projects.

  • Develop and execute test plans, integrate hardware and software, conduct experiments, and analyze results to advise government sponsor decisions.

  • Troubleshoot issues with existing code and collaborate with colleagues to resolve technical challenges.

  • Write proposals for internally or externally funded R&D projects.

  • Summarize and present results to other staff and sponsors and develop papers and briefings for publication.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify project requirements and develop solutions that meet those needs.

  • Stay up-to-date with emerging trends and technologies in astrodynamics / orbital mechanics fields.

  • Desire and ability to grow technical capabilities, programs, and staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of U.S. Space Force and the Air Force Research Laboratories.

  • Enhance knowledge of orbital mechanics or astrodynamics.

  • 9 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 7 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 4 years relevant experience with PhD in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 13 years relevant experience.

  • Understanding of computational physics and orbital calculations.

  • Skilled in conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis.

  • Experience in satellite mission planning or orbital analysis/orbit determination of natural and/or man-made NEOs.

  • At least 3 years’ experience converting optical astronomical data of NEOs to high- accuracy orbits. Experience with supplementing optical data with radar datasets is desirable.

  • Subject matter expertise in Space Domain Awareness, Space Situational Awareness , or Space Traffic Management.

  • U.S. Citizenship and Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI is required by contract.

Preferred Requirements

  • Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, engineering, or related field.

  • Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in diverse teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.

  • Experience coding and delivering algorithms in C++.

  • Experience performing rigorous analysis and algorithm development with large volumes of sensor data, including knowledge and experience in relevant programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, IDL, R, Scala, Julia, Rust, C/C++, or other relevant programming languages.

Physical Requirements

May require working in an office, industrial, shipboard, or laboratory environment. Capable of climbing ladders and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances.
