Horizon. 7 on / 7 off, rotating days and nights. Must be able to pass a pre site D&A.
POSITION PROFILE
Job Title: Scientific Specialist
Reports to (title): Laboratory Manager
Department: Laboratory Operations
Basic Purpose: What is the overall function of the job?
Assist in keeping current of the latest technological development in their field and assist to continuously improve efficiency and client service and satisfaction to increase company profitability
The Scientific Specialist acts as a resource to management and staff as required in order to work toward continuous improvement of both internal laboratory processes and internal and external customer satisfaction
Key Accountability/Responsibilities: What specifically is this job expected to accomplish?
Science and Technology:
Reviews alternative proposals for new technologies and recommends the ones with the best strategic return
Maintains or establishes relationships with technology suppliers
Provides technical support, guidance and leadership to Bureau Veritas’ Operational staff, as well as sales and customers service.
Remains current with all regulatory changes affecting Bureau Veritas’ laboratory and ensure appropriateness of analytical methods and systems to meet these requirements
Operations:
Participates in training staff
Provides the senior level data review to ensure the appropriate level of quality in all analytical data and processes to meet the needs of the customer
Validates analytical data at the job level (Tier II data validation)
Prepares customized reporting and ensures adequacy of Report Formatting/Report Definition
Evaluates changes in present procedures, which could improve efficiency, recovery, productivity etc.
Evaluates and validates potential methods for use within Bureau Veritas and, where necessary, develop new methods
Documents method changes and new methods as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Provides general lab support to other departments as required
Sales and Customer Service:
- For larger scale projects and for specific key clients the SS will act as project manager
Corporate:
Reviews and provides input on safety and security protocols
Adheres to Bureau Veritas Code of Ethics Policy
Supports and complies with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System and Health & Safety program
Participates, when requested in lab and health and safety meetings
Participates, when requested in internal and external audits
Keeps work area clean, neat and organized
All other responsibilities as assigned
Skills and Knowledge: What skills and knowledge are used to carry out job responsibilities and solve problems?
Post-secondary education, B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree and a minimum of 4-6 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience with instrumentation
Experience in method development, sample handling and chain of custody
Analytical problem solving skills and documentation skills; work on problem of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors
Exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions
Interpersonal - team approach
Organization and communication skills
Extensive experience with computer programs
Work Relationships
Internal: Laboratory Operations, Customer Service and Sample Logistics departments
External: Laboratory supplies and equipment vendors (Agilent, Fisher, etc.)
Working Conditions : physical work environment, physical effort, visual and listening attention, and travel
High level of work production in fast-paced lab environment
Fly in / Fly out – Edmonton or Calgary
Shift work 7 on / 7 off, rotating days and nights
Flexible working hours, overtime and shift work
Changing priorities and balancing workload to meet tight deadlines
Some lifting and carrying (up to 40 lbs) and may involve long periods of standing
Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate equipment
