Job Overview

As New York transitions to a clean energy economy, we are seeking to understand and explore all resources that may be required to support the State’s comprehensive decarbonization strategy, including the role of hydrogen, other low-carbon fuels and technologies for dispatchable emissions free resources (https://www.nyserda.ny.gov/All-Programs/Innovation-at-NYSERDA).

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) seeks a highly motivated, collaborative, experienced individual to join our Advanced Fuels and Thermal Energy Team within the Innovation Unit. This individual will assume a critical role in developing and implementing strategies for advanced clean fuels such as clean hydrogen and low-carbon fuels like clean ammonia, clean methanol in various applications.

The Senior Project Manager, Clean Fuels role may require travel up to approximately 10-20% of the time to meet with team members, current project partners, potential future partners, and other stakeholders. This role will report to Program Manager, Advanced fuels and Thermal Energy Innovation.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic analysis in clean fuels (such as hydrogen and other low carbon fuels) for decarbonization solutions in NYS for hard to electrify sectors and grid reliability. Evaluate market potential and technical readiness in New York’s thermal energy network to transition from fossil fuel to clean fuels. Develop and implement strategies to leverage federal funding to help bring products and technologies to NYS markets faster.

  • Work in close collaboration with a broad range of external partners, market participants, and stakeholders engaged in relevant work. Create strategic partnership with key market players. Remain up to date regarding the relevant technologies and markets. Identify market, regulatory, and technical barriers and opportunities through analysis and research and industry engagement.

  • Develop solicitations for research, development, and demonstration projects in advanced clean fuels and thermal energy areas. Design specific technical requirements and evaluation criteria within these solicitations to achieve the greatest impact for New York State. Negotiate innovation project contracts including the scope of work, milestones, and budgets for NYSERDA-funded activities. Effectively manage projects to deliver results on-time, on-budget, and successfully achieve expected outputs and outcomes.

  • Manage interactions with NYSERDA financial, legal, contractor and marketing resources for efficiency and effectiveness and perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum: Bachelor’s degree with 7 years of experience; Preferred: Master’s degree with 6 years of experience. A minimum of 2 years leadership experience is required, such as leading projects, leading a team, or leading a new initiative.

  • Bachelor's degree in science and technology, such as chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or related STEM field.

  • Knowledge related to product, market trend, customer need and technology landscape in one or more of these areas: hydrogen, other low carbon fuels, clean energy related industries.

  • Experience in research and development, including concept development, project design, technical approach validation, project performance evaluation, and transition to commercialization.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability, resourcefulness, adaptability, and pragmatism.

  • Skill in managing multiple projects or activities simultaneously and exercising skillful judgment.

  • Ability to be a self-starter and function well both independently and in teams.

  • Interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to develop relationships with key stakeholders.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, ability to produce effective and purposeful written materials.
