Sr. Full-stack Software Engineer

Employment is with The Research Foundation for The State University of New York, a private, nonprofit, educational corporation that administers sponsored program activity for the University at Albany. The Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research (ITSMR), affiliated with the University at Albany's Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, conducts traffic safety research and provides a variety of services to state and national organizations seeking to reduce motor vehicle crashes, fatalities and injuries.

Description of Duties (This is a brief summary of the hiring department and the duties of the role):

  • Lead the development, enhancement, maintenance, debugging, and testing of ITSMR’s custom-built Drug Recognition Expert applications. https://www.itsmr.org/dre-data-system/
  • Provide advanced technical support to end-users, troubleshoot complex technical issues, and ensure system reliability.
  • Administer and optimize the Atlassian/JIRA platform for project management and workflow efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and maintain scalable solutions.
  • Lead code reviews, design discussions, and guide the team in adopting best practices.
  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, reports, and user manuals.

Minimum Qualifications (Both measurable and soft skill requirements):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead projects from concept to deployment.
  • Extensive experience with the following technologies:
  • JavaScript (ES6+)
  • Java frameworks (e.g., Spring, Hibernate, Maven)
  • SQL (preferably MySQL)
  • RESTful API development (preferably in Java or Python)
  • HTML5 and CSS
    • Expertise in:
  • Version control systems (e.g., Git, SVN)
  • CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab)
    • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work with culturally diverse teams.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
    • Ability to work on-site in Albany, NY, at least 50% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building mobile applications (preferably with Cordova, Ionic).
  • Proficiency with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., Vue, React, or Angular).
  • Experience with Spring Boot.
  • Expertise with containerization and orchestration technologies like Kubernetes, OpenShift, Docker, and Docker Compose.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
  • Experience working in Linux environments.
  • Proficiency with Tomcat.
  • Proficiency with microservices architecture.
  • Strong unit testing skills (e.g., Jest, JUnit).
  • Familiarity with security best practices in software development, including secure coding, authentication, and data protection.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously, own projects, and deliver results with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Python.
