Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:Applicants must have proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) exam AND one of the following:• qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below, OR• one year of full-time qualifying experience as listed below.This title includes a traineeship opportunity, and applicants must meet one of the following:Either 1. A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology as listed below;Or 2. Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience as listed below.Qualifying degrees: Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering Technology, Environmental Design Engineering, Environmental Resources Engineering, Environmental Systems Engineering, Forest Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Paper Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Soil and Water Resources Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.Qualifying experience: One year of full-time experience in sanitary, public health or environmental engineering.

Duties Description Assist in carrying out design responsibility for projects under contract.• Assist in designing the more complex systems relating to sanitary and civil engineering systems and as needed, may supervise Junior Engineers.• Prepare special reports relating to sanitary and civil engineering systems, including recommendations for changes in design, construction or operational procedures and practices on an as needed basis.• Assist in writing and reviewing specifications for sanitary engineering projects.• Assist in the review and approval of contractors’ shop drawings.• Coordinate design work and related specifications work, estimating work, etc., with the other disciplines.• Assist in scheduling assigned projects according to workload, priorities, and design schedules.• Assist in the review of plans, specifications and cost estimated prepared by design consultants for the sanitary and civil engineering systems and facilities.• May supervise consultant work.• Perform other duties as assigned.• Some travel may be required.

Additional Comments * There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired via NY HELPS will be appointed on a permanent non-competitive basis and will begin a probationary period.At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.
