Assistant Attorney

Department: Office of the General Counsel

Position Summary

Under direction of the General Counsel, the Assistant Attorney provides quality legal service to departments within the System on matters requiring legal attention which arise in the course of the System's business and operations, including advice interpreting and implementing the laws governing the System and other laws applicable to the System.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited law school with a JD or LLB degree

  • Admission to the New York State Bar

  • Experience with FOIL

  • Experience reading/interpreting legal documents - specifically Trusts, Powers of Attorney and Domestic Relation Orders

  • Experience interpreting and drafting statutes and regulations

  • Litigation experience, specifically with Article 78 proceedings

  • Tax law experience

Work Modality

This position is subject to a hybrid work schedule.

Job Duties

The duties of the Assistant Attorney include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Applicant will be expected to develop and serve as subject matter expert on benefits, investments, operations, regulatory and compliance related matters

  • Respond to FOIL requests, records requests and subpoenas

  • Review trust documents for beneficiary designations, Powers of Attorney and other court documents

  • Negotiate contracts,prepare opinions, determination letters and memorandum of law

  • Interpret statutes and rules and regulations

  • Respond to System litigation

  • Provide legal advice and guidance in review of Domestic Relations Orders

  • Provide advice and counsel on benefits, investments, operations and compliance matters which may arise in course of System's operation

  • Generally assist the General Counsel and other Office of the General Counsel staff

Salary Grade

This position is a Grade 25.

Salary Range

$106,906 - $139,488
