U.S. Air Force Academy ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (HISTORY) in Air Force Academy, Colorado

Summary This is a tenure track position. Responsibilities Major Duties of the Position: The Department of History at the United States Air Force Academy seeks applicants with expertise in the history of modern war, broadly construed, for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant professor. In particular, the department desires applicants with expertise in the interactions of society, culture, and conflict. Applicants should possess and demonstrate the ability to teach in at least one of the core (general-education) military and world history courses offered to all USAF Academy students. The selectee for this position will also teach other courses based on the needs of the department as well as upper-division courses related to their regional and thematic specialty. Beyond the core courses, the department has teaching needs in the history of the modern Middle East, gender, colonialism, and/or race. Applicants with those additional specialties will be considered favorably; however, any applicant with expertise related to peace and conflict studies and the more general history of war is invited to apply. The selectee will have responsibility for lesson planning and preparation, course instruction, grading, class exercises, exams, assessment, academic advising, and will be expected to perform service tasks at the departmental and USAF Academy levels. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A PhD degree in History or related discipline is required by employment start date. ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES: History (see above for specific sub-field); candidates with degrees in Area Studies may be considered based on demonstrated qualifications. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be assessed based on education, evidence of teaching effectiveness, quality of scholarship, and demonstrated institutional service. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching. Applicants should submit the following items: cover letter describing the candidate's qualifications in university-level teaching, academic service, and historical scholarship; an updated curriculum vitae with a complete publication record and a list of at least three references; evidence of teaching effectiveness in the form of student evaluations, peer evaluations, or sample syllabi; and a separate letter detailing how they would best contribute their skills and experience in serving the Air Force Academy mission of developing leaders of character. However, you must show proof that the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. education program.
