This position is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic special project prototyping environment on complex projects involving composites, fab/machining, paint, assembly, and application of specialty low observable features and coatings. Projects are quite varied and could be fully integrated small aircraft demonstrators, mission capable payloads and pods, RCS test bodies, and more. Ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual with skills in multiple disciplines and able to exercise creative thinking and problem solving to work through challenges with special attention to quality. Projects can be short or long lived many times with quick reaction schedules and may require work in remote or classified spaces with alternate working hours. This could typically be a week or two at a time several times per year but could vary. Experience in multiple trades is preferred due to the wide variety of tasks required to complete projects with limited staffing.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform prototype manufacturing from visual/verbal descriptions, sketches, blueprints, templates, work instructions, specifications, and sample parts.

  • Receive instruction through oral instructions, rough sketches, process documents or memos. Determines equipment, material, and fixture needs and sets up, operates, adjusts, and verifies process and assembly as required.

  • Provide input to Engineering and builds prototype tooling, molds, and parts while solving technical problems. Develop shop aids to facilitate fabrication, trimming and assembly as required.

  • Prepare lamination molds, layout and place composite materials including carbon fiber, fiberglass, honeycomb, adhesive layers, etc., according to drawings, templates, or other methods.

  • Prepare surfaces and paint composite, metal, and plastic components including bodywork, contour shaping and sanding. Apply spray application of epoxy and urethane paints and other specialty coatings using a high-volume low-pressure spray gun or other spray equipment.

  • Apply specialty coatings to low observable RCS test bodies with special attention to tight tolerance fit and finish.

  • Analyze and resolves work problems or assists coworkers in solving work problems.

  • Assemble aircraft components using structural adhesives, rivets, and threaded fasteners.

  • Fabricate steel/aluminum structures and form sheet metal parts using a variety of machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments such as drill presses, lathes, manual mills, saws, breaks, grinding equipment, welders and others as required.

  • Recommends measures to improve production methods.

  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

  • Help maintain and clean and safe work area by retuning tools, equipment and materials to storage areas, preforming housekeep duties as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires associate's degree or equivalent with two or more years of experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.

  • Training and/or experience in test or experimental operations normally acquired in the military or technical schools desirable.

  • Ability and willingness to work on systems which have unusual conditions such as high pressure, high voltage, high energy, cryogens, or radioactive materials.

  • Experience with Composite lamination, Composite assembly and Composite tooling.

  • Paint and body work.

  • Experience with application of low observable coatings.

  • TIG/MIG Welding, Machining/Fabrication

  • Carpentry /Wood working.

  • CNC, CAD/ Drafting.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD secret security clearance.
