Job Description: The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing various computer and information networks, including LANs, WANs, intranets, extranets, and other data communications networks. This role involves network modeling, analysis, and planning, with a focus on capacity needs for network infrastructures. Additionally, the engineer may design network and computer security measures and recommend hardware and software solutions for network and data communications. Project-specific: responsibilities include installing, configuring, and supporting an organization’s LAN, WAN, AIN, intranet, and internet systems. The engineer maintains network hardware and software, ensures network availability, and performs necessary maintenance. They may supervise other network support specialists, plan and implement network security measures, and provide leadership to junior and mid-level engineers. The role also involves overseeing the network control center, supporting network-related projects, evaluating new network technologies, and planning new configurations for optimal network performance. The engineer ensures adequate planning for hardware and communications facilities and supports the translation of business requirements into telecommunications needs. The complexity of the position is heightened by the overarching INFOSEC and COMSEC security requirements for the agency network. Position Responsibilities: Network Installation and Configuration: Install, configure, and maintain LAN, WAN, and data communications network components. Set up and configure operating systems and physical/virtual servers. System Monitoring and Maintenance: Perform system monitoring to ensure the integrity and availability of hardware, network, and server resources. Review system and application logs, and verify the completion of scheduled jobs, including system backups. Network Performance and Security Management: Manage network performance and ensure network security. Implement and enforce security procedures to protect network resources. Software Management: Install and upgrade software and maintain software licenses on all network devices. Ensure all network software is installed and updated correctly. Troubleshooting and Support: Troubleshoot network and server issues and provide technical support as needed. Assist in network modeling, analysis, planning, and coordination between hardware and software. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of system configurations, changes, and performance statistics. Prepare and present reports on network performance and security. Compliance and Standards: Establish and implement network policies, procedures, and standards. Ensure compliance with information systems and organizational objectives. Qualifications: Technical Skills: Proficient in installing, configuring, and maintaining LAN, WAN, and data communications networks. Experience with operating systems and physical/virtual server management. Knowledge of system monitoring tools and techniques. Ability to review system and application logs and verify scheduled job completion. Familiarity with network modeling, analysis, and planning. Experience with software installation, upgrades, and license management. Strong understanding of network security procedures and implementation. Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Strong communication and teamwork abilities. Ability to train users on network operations. Detail-oriented with a focus on maintaining system integrity and availability.
