UIC Government Services and the Bowhead Family of Companies Engineering Technician Machinist in Aberdeen, Maryland
Overview
Bowhead has an immediate need for a Machinist I-II with possible steps to support the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG).
Responsibilities
Constructing components, subunits, or simple models or adapts standard equipment; may troubleshoot and correct malfunctions;
Follow specific layout and scientific diagrams to construct and package simple devices and subunits of equipment
Extract and compile a variety of engineering data from field notes, manuals, lab reports, etc., processing data, identifying errors or inconsistencies, selecting methods of data presentation.
Assist in design modification by compiling data related to design, specifications, and materials that are pertinent to specific items of equipment or component parts; developing information concerning previous operational failures and modifications, and using judgment and initiative to recognize inconsistencies or gaps in data and seek sources to clarify information.
Read drawings and sketches provided by technical points of contact, independently set-up machine tools, preparing parts/materials and hardware, fabricating components, thoroughly cleaning/deburring, and assembling items as required.
Proficiently generate machine codes from the sketches/drawings to operate the Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) mill and lathe to manufacture parts
Proficiently operate manual mills, lathes, Bridgeport’s, drill presses, belt sanders, grinders
Conduct manual Machining prototype work
With direct supervision, able to manufacture necessary tooling, jigs and fixtures and can perform cylindrical grinding
Solve mathematical problems related to assignments, capable of shop related math skills
Provide recommendations for improving these operations by recommending new equipment, methods, or materials for accomplishment of tasks, consistent with applicable regulatory guidance and safety SOPs
Set up and operating a fourth axis unit on the CNC and manual mills, drill presses and Bridgeports
Work from verbal and written customer instructions to complete assignments. Provide guidance to Engineers in machining principles and order of operations
Qualifications
Eligibility at the Technician I level:
High School diploma or equivalent is required at a minimum.
Machining or trade school attendance preferred
Perform recurring work, listed in Typical Responsibilities, with guidance from Team Leaders or senior technicians
Have basic knowledge of manual and CNC milling machines and lathes
Basic to Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts
Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team
Must be able to obtain and maintain certification/license to operate Government and Bowhead vehicles at all times
Eligibility at the Technician II level:
All elements under the eligibility at the Technician I level above
Minimum 3 years of applicable experience
Independently operate and maintain conventional lathes and machinery
Provide semi-professional machining support for engineers working in such areas as research, design, development, testing, or manufacturing process improvement
Perform assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed
Select or adapt standard procedures or equipment, using fully applicable precedents
Receive initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or engineer as needed
Perform recurring work independently. Work is reviewed for technical adequacy or conformity with instructions
Work efficiently and hold very close tolerances (+/- .005 ") as a minimum for the lowest level requirement, and (+/- .0001") for higher level fabrications
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively
Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time
Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
