Job Summary

Reports to: Chief Program Officer

Supervises: Manager, Outdoor Experience and Senior Manager, Outdoor Experience

Summary: Responsible for ensuring girls and volunteers have ample opportunities to experience outdoor adventure, develop life skills and learn about the environment, nature and adventure, based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Implements strategies to achieve council goals and objectives for outdoor programming and camp utilization. Partners with Volunteer Experience and Girl Experience to ensure that girls and volunteers in all pathways have access to high-quality outdoor experiences. Ensures high-quality marketing and communication strategies to support outdoor experience opportunities leveraging Council and other resources.

Job Qualifications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following and other duties as assigned.

• Provides leadership to a broad portfolio of outdoor experience programs including: camping (overnight, day and weekend), equitation, aquatics (swimming, canoe, kayak, SUP, etc.), sailing, target sports (archery, riflery, etc.), backpacking, challenge and adventure course, fitness (cycling, hiking, etc.), and new program development.

• Develops and executes strategies for, and oversees the administration of high-quality overnight, day and twilight camps and year-round outdoor programs and camping experiences that support girls and volunteers throughout the Council and implement the national program portfolio.

• Leads and supervises Outdoor Experience team and camp staff. Provide direction, support, and training to develop well-motivated staff teams to accomplish the Council goals and objectives. Promotes team building through effective communications, targeted training, and staff development opportunities.

• Recruit, place, orient, and train Outdoor Experience Manager(s) and camp staff in consultation with direct supervisor and human resources representative. Initiate employment and release when necessary.

• Partners with volunteers, girls and staff across the Council to develop program and facility strategies that effectively support the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and Council goals and objectives. Develops partnerships that increase the quality and progression of experiences available to our members.

• Ensures Outdoor Experience programs are delivered by well-trained staff, volunteers and partners based on outcome and achievement driven curriculum to a growing and diverse Girl Scout membership. Supports volunteers in delivery and leadership of Council programs, and ensures programs provide leadership development opportunities for girls.

• Develops and implements a risk management plan for all outdoor program operations ensuring safe and high-quality programs are offered to members while complying with all safety standards. Develops, promotes and ensures direction and administration of ACA accredited camp programs at each overnight camp and day camp. Provides risk management oversight for all outdoor experience initiatives. Ensures that outdoor program offerings are consistent with GSUSA and GSSJC policies, procedures, guidelines, health and safety standards, local, state and federal laws and other relevant governing or advising bodies.

• Implement continuous quality improvement practices including outcomes measurement, evaluation and program improvement and business process improvement to increase member satisfaction and deliver WOW moments and impactful programs for girls and volunteers.

• Collaborates with Marketing and Communications to develop and implement strategies to educate stakeholders of the importance of outdoor experiences, as well as increase participation in outdoor program opportunities and camp utilization.

• Collaborates with Development team to increase resources for Girl Scout outdoor education and leadership.

• Collaborates with Facilities, Customer Care, Girl Experience, Volunteer Experience, Outreach and Community Engagement to ensure that girls and volunteers in all pathways have access to high-quality outdoor experiences.

• Develop programmatic templates and modules for volunteer implementation that align to the GSLE outcomes and national program portfolio.

• Partners with staff, volunteers and girls across the council to find, leverage, and share stories about how Girl Scouting changes girls’ lives – and how girls change the world.

• Responsible for development of budgets and monitoring of mission centers.

• Develops and executes a written plan for assigned areas for achieving Council goals and objectives related to camp utilization, program participation, outcome achievement and girl retention.

• Assist in the development of strategies and provide leadership, direction and support to special assignments in order to reach Council goals and objectives. Perform all duties and requirements for the success of the assigned project.

• Demonstrate proficiency in using Council resources and technologies. Leverage Council technologies to enable department strategies.

• Responsible for Council relationships with outside vendors, partners, contract negotiations, and collaborative partners.

• Advises the Properties Committee.
